House Democrats to hold contempt vote Wednesday after Barr misses deadline
Source: Washington Post
Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee said they will vote Wednesday on whether to hold Attorney General William P. Barr in contempt of Congress after Barr missed a deadline to produce a complete version of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III's report.
The panel had set a deadline of 9 a.m. Monday for Barr to provide the unredacted version of Mueller's report on Russian interference in the 2016 election. It announced the planned vote in a statement Monday.
"Although the Committee has attempted to engage in accommodations with Attorney General Barr for several months, it can no longer afford to delay, and must resort to contempt proceedings," reads the text of a contempt report released by Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.). "The Committee urgently requires access to the full, unredacted Mueller Report and to the investigatory and evidentiary materials cited in the Report."
Barr had released a redacted version on April 18, but Democrats said that was insufficient and have been seeking the full report and the underlying evidence. In response to a committee subpoena, the Justice Department said last week that it was "unable to provide" Mueller's investigative files, citing a "compelling need to protect the autonomy and effectiveness of its investigations."

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

(128,506 posts)They have scheduled the vote to hold him in contempt. This is a process (so if it does go to court some time in the future, it won't be kicked back by a judge claiming that they didn't follow the steps).

(8,682 posts)A contempt citation and a $2 will get you a cup of coffee.
It means absolutely nothing to Barr or this administration or the trump Justice Dept.
Even if they pass a criminal contempt citation, it's up to the Justice Dept to enforce it and it has refused to do so lately.
Even if it did, trump could fire any deputy AD that took the case to a grand jury.
The AG can be impeached. The contempt can be one of the articles of impeachment.
He clearly lied to Congress. Even if the Senate won't convict, there would be little doubt it would seem partisan as hell. Because, again, Barr has clearly been lying.

(128,506 posts)And THAT is why they are going through these steps. There has already been buzz about impeaching Barr. But you can't do a "Fire!", "Ready!", "Aim!" strategy if you are going that route.

WASHINGTON (AP) The Latest on Congress and the special counsels Russia probe (all times local):
2:40 p.m.
The Justice Department is proposing a meeting to reach an acceptable accommodation with the House Judiciary Committee after the chairman scheduled a vote to hold the attorney general in contempt of Congress for not producing special counsel Robert Muellers full report.
Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd proposed the meeting for Wednesday, the same day as the contempt vote.
The Justice Department released a redacted version of Muellers report on the Russia investigation last month.
But House Judiciary Chairman Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., issued a subpoena for the full, unredacted report and underlying investigative documents and set a Monday deadline, which the Justice Department did not meet.
Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec says the agency will continue to engage in good faith with the committee.
