(CNN) Peggy Lipton, a Golden Globe award winning actress and star of the hit television show "Mod Squad," has died. She was 72. Lipton's death from cancer was announced in a statement from her daughters, Kidada and Rashida Jones, who said she "made her journey peacefully with her daughters and nieces by her side."

Lipton came to stardom playing undercover police officer Julie Barnes in the series "Mod Squad," which ran from 1968 to 1973. That role earned her four Golden Globe nominations and one win for Best TV Actress in a drama. She also starred as Norma Jennings on the television series "Twin Peaks."

Lipton was married to renowned music producer Quincy Jones from 1974 to 1990. The couple share daughters Kidada Jones and Rashida Jones, who is known for her roles on the comedy series "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation." "Peggy was, and will always be our beacon of light, both in this world and beyond. She will always be a part of us," the daughters shared.

Wow. Just heard this on my local news radio station this morning. Keep forgetting that she had been married to Quincy Jones at one time but sorry to have heard this.

I used to occasionally watch Mod Squad. Quintessential '70s TV.

R.I.P.

She was diagnosed after a routine exam in 2004 and had it treated with chemo. What a shame. She was a feminist, a Dem and an animal lover as well as a great mom. Very sad for her daughters and Mother's Day.

the days of the form-fitting leather jackets, thick turtlenecks, large pointy shirt collars and clean cut polyester pants with a flare at the bottom (not quite bell-bottom but close) - sometimes complimented with a wide belt. They were "hip".

Having now raised children, I know it's always a thing when children become fascinated by people older than them but younger than their parents.

I tend to think that 1968 made it weirder than most other times, but maybe that's just because it was my time.

Even so, just looking at the picture of the three of them activates a part of my brain that belongs to only to me and them, fictional though they are.

R.I.P. Ms Lipton.

Way too young. Fuck Cancer.

i wanted to BE Julie Barnes.

Seems like she was a great person in real life, too.... and gone too soon. Condolences to her lovely family and all who loved her, including me. (It doesn't get any easier having to say goodbye to those childhood icons.)

She was such a good role model for young girls in the early '70s.

Rest in Peace, Ms. Lipton. Thank you!
