Former president Jimmy Carter undergoes surgery to repair broken hip after fall at his home

Source: Washington Post

Former president Jimmy Carter is recovering from surgery after a fall Monday morning in which he broke his hip.

The Carter Center said in a statement that Carter, 94, was leaving his home in Plains, Georgia, to go turkey hunting when he took a fall. The former president is recovering at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Ga., after surgery that his surgeon said was successful. His wife, Rosalynn, is with him.

"President Carter said his main concern is that turkey season ends this week, and he has not reached his limit," the Carter Center said in its statement. "He hopes the State of Georgia will allow him to rollover the unused limit to next year."

Carter announced in 2015 that doctors had discovered a form of melanoma that had spread to his brain. He received his first radiation treatment at age 90. Four months later, he was -- remarkably -- cancer free.

I've lost three relatives in their late 80's and early 90's from falls which broke "major" bones. (Hip, femur, and ribs). It took 6 to 9 months.

Hopefully the surgeon and anesthesiologist used a spinal anesthetic rather than a general one. I do know someone who was pretty spunky, broke a hip at 99, recovered and didn't even walk with a cane afterwards.

had a similar experience at about 90. Broke hip, had pins put in with epidural, never looked back. Lived to be 101 1/2 and died of old age. The woman won a genetic jackpot somewhere. She had nothing wrong with her ever.

Doctor came out of the OR and told us the surgery went perfectly, that she would be able to run wind sprints but for her OTHER hip--but due to the anesthesia, she never took another breath on her own. They took her off the respirator a week later, after hoping she could be weaned off it, and she died within an hour.

President Carter was going turkey hunting, suggesting a significant one, or a number of them, right there. We can also be sure he won't be unable to understand instructions or cooperate with physical therapy.

My grandfather died mostly from a broken hip and was his age. But if there's one thing I know it is that President Carter will fight to keep living after all these years. If brain cancer can't take him I would like to think a broken hip will not either.

Not our most successful president, But I would name him the most morally upright and caring president in over a century. And if faith and a positive attitude mean anything it is this-here is a man who can heal not only because of himself, but because we need him so badly. Take a moment for a moral inventory-compare President Carter and trump-laugh your ass off-repeat. No matter what they say, they offer a "deal" but we offer hope. Bless you Sir.

He went into a nuclear power core of a defunct power reactor to clean it out when, literally, NO ONE knew what the consequences would be. He put his whole team, including himself, on a schedule to make sure that nobody got more exposure to the danger than he did. He is the modern day embodiment of the old royal officer who sits on his horse, ready to fight, at the start of the column.

Jimmy Carter is a very active man, especially so for his age. That will do him well in this situation.

My dad broke his hip when he was 89. Up until that point in time, I could never keep up with him. He was extremely active, played golf and walked practically everyday. And it really paid off when he broke his hip.

Luckily for President Carter, he has very good health care. My dad was lucky in that he had an ER nurse living across the street from us. And she monitored every step of my dad's recovery. He did wonderfully, and was back to living a normal life. He passed away at the age of 93. I am absolutely convinced that he would still be here today, coming up on the age of 100, had my mom not passed away. Dad died of a broken heart, not a broken hip.

Sending a ton of positive thoughts to President and Mrs. Carter. May he have a swift recovery as my dad did, and may he get back to living his life to the fullest.

My grandmother fell and broke her hip at 95 - complicated by the fact that she wasn't found immediately. She lived in a retirement community with an emergency call switch in each apartment, but she couldn't reach it! Fortunately, there were check ins twice a day, so she did get help and went back to living a normal life. She was very active, too - volunteered to help the "old people" in the community. She also participated in every activity on offer - since she wanted to make sure that whatever it was (bingo, bowling, line dancing, etc.) continued!

And Jimmy Carter is also one of those people. He gets up and shows up (including building houses!) to help others. And teaches Sunday School to help his church. He is one amazing human being and I have a feeling that he'll recover in record time just so he doesn't let anyone else down.

President Carter is more active at 94 than many of US decades his junior. I've had the surgery and the only downside has been the metal pin that gets special attention at airports. Otherwise, my bionic parts work as well as the original issue, almost.
