New York Mayor Bill de Blasio adds his name to the Democratic presidential field

Source: Washington Post

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, the twice-elected chief executive of the nation’s largest city, announced Thursday that he is joining the Democratic field of presidential candidates, pledging in a campaign video that he would “put working people first.”

“There’s plenty of money in this world. There’s plenty of money in this country. It’s just in the wrong hands,” de Blasio says at the outset of the video, in which he recounts his liberal agenda as mayor and pledges to stand up to President Trump. “I’m a New Yorker. I’ve known Trump’s a bully for a long time. This is not news to me or anyone here, and I know how to take him on.”

De Blasio is expected to make his first public appearance as a candidate later Thursday morning on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” He plans to travel to Iowa and South Carolina this week for a series of introductory campaign events.

The entry of another liberal lawmaker in the crowded Democratic field provides another option for the wing of the primary electorate that seeks to counter the era of Trump with policies that are more aggressive and disruptive than those of President Barack Obama.

with over 20 others in the race, why did he feel the need to toss his hat into the ring?

(we currently have a 2-term mayoral limit). He's not exactly the most popular Mayor New York has ever seen.

Since he got elected our mayor has been more interested in being a "national progressive leader" than his duties as mayor. Of course the best thing he could have done for the progressive movement is to be a good mayor.

That means not every current candidate will make it onto the stage.

I can't think of anything they could possibly gain from this other than trying to sell books.

edit: if you say something like "there's only 26" then you're just going to further prove my point, so thanks in advance.

I think that a lot of these "guys" are doing it seeking to raise their own profile rather than for the good of the country, but I suppose they'll be weeded out soon enough.
