Senate GOP vows to quickly quash any impeachment charges

Source: The Hill

GOP senators say that if the House passes articles of impeachment against President Trump they will quickly quash them in the Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has broad authority to set the parameters of a trial.

While McConnell is required to act on articles of impeachment, which require 67 votes or a two-thirds majority to convict the president, he and his Republican colleagues have the power to set the rules and ensure the briefest of trials.

"I think it would be disposed of very quickly," said Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.).

-snip-

McConnell would have broad authority to determine how a Senate trial would play out. He could stifle the arguments of Democratic prosecutors from the House as long as he's backed up by his fellow GOP senators.

And the equally disappointing knowledge that I’ll have to live out my days among traitors. They make me physically sick. Their justification for their behavior makes me sick.

for anything having to do with their actions or statements while in Congress. Both members of the House and Senate have that protection in the Constitution. The reason for it is pretty simple. See if you can think of why that is written into the Constitution.

Again, Constitution 101.

I encourage you to read the document. That will answer many of your questions.

the House would have developed and presented as a basis for impeachment, the Senate has predetermined the adjudication of their boy, right? That's no different than calling someone guilty with no evidence at all.

Sounds like their boy really could shoot somebody on 5th Avenue with no consequences.

Something is effed up here. GOTV would appear to be the only answer.

there are not reams of rules, procedures and case law that govern how impeachment will proceed. There is certainly is no mandatory presumption that the Democrats started the process in good faith and therefore the Senate has to take it seriously.

After all his attempts, he finally owns the USA. McConnell is in business with a Russian oligarch. He overturned sanctions on Russia to make sure his business deal went through. Rubles won over self respect and loyalty to country once again with the gop. Just as the Mueller report has been hidden, to protect tRump, so will the reasons for impeachment be hidden. The democratic politicians had better make certain the reasons for impeaching the orange blob are well documented, and public. Make every crime public, until even the gop will not be able to deny the truth.

True, Democratic members of the House need to do their job and investigate tRump's many many many offenses. But if, as McTurtle has promised, an impeachment will get nowhere in the Senate, these investigations need to be done for maximum political impact to ensure that we'll gain control of the White House and Senate.

I feel a bit slimy saying that the House should do things for political gain, but fuck it, GOPers have been playing it that way for decades. Furthermore, it's not like we'd be making up facts but rather we'd simply be putting truthful information out into the open.

As long as republicans think Americans don't care about impeachment they'll just sweep it under the rug. It's always party over country for the GOP. A massive protest is needed to get their, and the nation's, attention on this matter. I haven't heard a peep about one, but if I knew how to start one I'd do it. Someone must have a clue how to get this started.

any impeachment. Sure, Little Lindsey has been the most vocal opponent and yes, McTurtle controls the vote yet one can bet many will squirm their word to say yes, Trump's a bad actor but it doesn't rise to impeachment. They will also use the Mueller report as weasel words that since he could not impeach Trump, why should I?

They want to have it both ways to fend off our Democratic attacks that they have ignored their responsibilities.

Let the Voters know that Democrats in the House do have a backbone.
When AOI gets to the Senate, fill the streets in front of the Senate Building and demand action.
This will surely let the voters decide which party they want to maintain the House and which Party they want to retake the Senate.
If Democrats do nothing than they are as much at fault to allow the Dictator to destroy our Democracy as the Republicans.
