Corbyn backs soft Brexit and says second referendum 'some way off'
Source: The Guardian
Jeremy Corbyn has said a second referendum is some way off and that Labour still wants to negotiate a better Brexit deal, resisting pressure from shadow cabinet ministers to commit to campaigning immediately for a public vote.
Speaking in Dublin, the Labour leader said the only way to break the deadlock would be a general election or a second referendum after negotiating a softer Brexit deal with Brussels.
Corbyn said there must not be a repeat of the 2016 referendum on Britains EU membership, and argued that Labour could strike a better agreement with Brussels that would include a customs union, which would then be put to a public vote.
He said: We dont back a rerun of 2016. That happened. That is gone. What I do say is that if parliament comes to an agreement, then its reasonable, and if parliament wishes it, there should be a public vote on it but that is some way off.

I have no idea what political strategy Corbyn thinks he's carrying out.

(6,034 posts)This is why May always wiped the floor with him. Because as she says "he tells leave voters one thing and remain voters another"
It is quite clear the Labour Party doesn't have a strategy.

(112 posts)Corbyn is a Brexiter. Labour's success at Parliamentary elections was largely due at the large number of young people that voted in hopes of reversing Brexit. They voted for Liberal Democrats at EU election in protest at Corbyn's double talk on Brexit and opposition to second referendum.
Everyone knows that Leave will lose handily if a second referendum is held.
It was unfortunate that at a time UK was in need of real leadership, it ended up with the two of most inept leaders in recent history, May and Corbyn.
