Trump says he might meet with Boris Johnson, Nigel Farage during UK visit

Source: Politico

President Donald Trump on Thursday said he might meet with Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage — pro-Brexit politicians vying to replace outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May — when he visits the U.K. next week.

The president’s comments come days after he said he feels “badly” for May, who announced Friday that she would resign after failing to get Parliament to ratify her deal to exit the European Union.

Trump, who has backed Brexit since his 2016 presidential campaign, told reporters Thursday that he considers Johnson and Farage to be “very good guys” and “very interesting people.” But he refrained from offering support to either candidate.

“I mean, they're friends of mine. But I haven't thought about supporting them,” he said. “Maybe it’s not my business to support people. But I have a lot of respect for both of those men.”

The next hearing at Westminster magistrates court is expected to take place in three or four weeks and will be purely administrative, but Johnson will have to attend. He and his legal team will be asked if he intends to contest the case.

I heard on the radio the full case was expected to be heard months from now - well after the Tory leadership contest will be over.

Heaven forbid he becomes PM, but can a sitting PM be indicted? Maybe this is what he and trump will talk about when they meet.

It can certainly happen to MPs (we had one convicted for misleading a police investigation, about a speeding ticket, recently - she got a short prison sentence, and the by-election to replace her happens in a week's time), and the PM is 'first among equals' - no special rules for them.

I can't see there's any chance he'd get a really long sentence, even if found guilty. I'll be surprised if he is found guilty - from what I gather, they need to prove he knew he was lying, and not just playing fast and loose with definitions, and I don't think anything like this has been tried before. But it's possible that the case hanging over him will hurt his chances of becoming party leader/PM, which is probably a good thing - he's worse than most of the others.

3. A meeting of like minded demagogues

Boris Johnson advocates a hard Brexit. He will be hard pressed to survive a confidence vote in Parliament. Many Tories are opposed to leaving EU without some sort of agreement, such as the Irish border.

Nigel Farage is not only a demagogue like Johnoson, but he is as racist as Stephen Miller.

The icing on the cake is Trump meeting with discredited outgoing PM Theresa May.

I can't wait for Trump to say that there were fine people on both sides when he visits Normandy for the D-Day commemoration.
