Thad Cochran, Mississippi Republican and former Senate Appropriations chairman, dies at 81

By Emily Langer, Obituary writer
May 30 at 11:02 AM

Thad Cochran, a Mississippi Republican who brought Southern gentility to Washington and Washington largesse to the South over nearly four decades in the U.S. Senate, where he was a past chairman of the powerful Appropriations Committee, died May 30 in Oxford, Miss. He was 81.

His death was announced by the office of U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, who succeeded Mr. Cochran in the Senate after he resigned in April 2018. No other details were immediately available.

Mr. Cochran spent nearly half a century on Capitol Hill, first as a House member representing a district that included Jackson, Miss., from 1972 to 1978 and later in the Senate. He narrowly defeated an insurgent tea party challenger — in a primary race that drew national headlines for its nastiness — and went on to win his seventh term in 2014.
....

A complete obituary will be published soon.

RIP, Thad Cochran.
Passed away peacefully this morning, in Oxford, per the office of his successor.
His last few years might not have been his sharpest, but he was a force inside the chamber for 35 years or so.
Part of the early wave of GOP winning southern Senate seats.

Always took care of his constituents, and didn't follow the GOP down its crazy-hole.

Man arrested for allegedly photographing Thad Cochran’s wife in nursing home

By Sean Sullivan, Reporter covering national politics
May 17, 2014

A Mississippi man was arrested Friday on allegations that he apparently entered a nursing home to photograph the bedridden wife of Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) and posted an image of her online.

The Madison Police Department said in a statement that Clayton Thomas Kelly, 28, of Pearl, Miss., was arrested because he "illegally and improperly obtained an image of a vulnerable adult resident without their consent for his own benefit." His bond has been set at $100,000.
....

Kelly is a blogger who has posted items opposing Cochran and supporting his Republican primary challenger, state Sen. Chris McDaniel, the Jackson Clarion-Ledger newspaper reported.

Only to watch it throttled by the likes of McConnell, Graham and Sessions.
