US military personnel ordered to paint border barriers to improve 'aesthetic appearance'
Source: The Hill
United States military personnel deployed near the U.S.-Mexico border have reportedly been assigned to paint certain barrier structures to strengthen their aesthetic appearance.
Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said on Twitter Wednesday afternoon that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) informed Congress that troops are going to spend the next month painting barriers and that the primary purpose is to improve the aesthetic appearance.
A disgraceful misuse of taxpayer $$, Durbin said on Twitter. Our military has more important work to do than making Trumps wall beautiful.
DHS pointed to the benefits of painting border structures in its notification to Congress, noting painting border barriers in Tucson, Arizona, helped Border Patrol agents combat "camouflaging tactics of illegal border crossers" who tried to escape detection, CBS News reported.
DHS added that migrants appear to have more difficulty climbing painted barriers.

(20,992 posts)Then the troops can sweat their nuts off in the Arizona summer heat doing something completely pointless.
I seem to recall these are mostly select individuals who wanted this duty. These soldiers are about to learn the first rule of the military: "never volunteer for anything".

(7,859 posts)Circa 1967 on a military base in the south which had been snowed on. We the "military personnel" of the base were ordered by the base commander to do the following to prepare for an IG (Inspector General) inspection scheduled for the next day.
1. paint the leaves on the Palmetto trees that lined the entrance to the base.
2. turn over the "dirty" snow along the entrance so that it was clean white snow.
Try and picture that! Freshly painted green Palmetto trees with clean white snow underneath.
I assumed we passed because the base is still in full operation ~52 years later. I'll bet the Palmetto trees eventually died.

If you're planning on painting a large amount of useless barrier material, you can't get much more if an experienced workforce to do so than lower enlisted in the military.
Not that it isn't one of the most stupid explainations I've heard for sending troops to the border.... migrants have a harder time crossing a painted barrier? Really?
