GOP in disarray as budget impasse threatens shutdown, deep cuts -- and default

Senate Republicans and the Trump administration are struggling to reach an agreement on a path forward on critical budget and spending issues, threatening not only another government shutdown and deep spending cuts but a federal default that could hit the economy hard.

GOP leaders have spent months cajoling President Trump in favor of a bipartisan budget deal that would fund the government and raise the limit on federal borrowing this fall, but their efforts have yet to produce a deal. And the uncertain path forward was underscored at the Capitol this week, when a budget meeting between key Senate Republicans, including Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), and senior White House officials left out Democrats, whose votes will be imperative to avoid a shutdown and an economy-shaking breach of the federal debt limit.

“We’re negotiating with ourselves right now,” said Senate Appropriations Chairman Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.). “The president, the administration, has some views, maybe, that are a little different sometimes than the Senate Republicans have. So we’re trying to see if we can be together as best we can.”

The GOP dysfunction — coupled with a new House Democratic majority with its own priorities — leaves the sides much farther apart than they were at this point in last year’s budget process, which ended in a record-long government funding lapse. At the time, Republicans controlled both chambers of Congress, but negotiations stalled over funding Trump’s immigration priorities.

He'll just say, "I'm a financial genius who paid creditors 10 cents on the dollar. Uncle Sam should do that too."

impeachment issue. If we start impeachment now and a budget deal doesn't get passed isn't it likely that the R's will blame the Dem's emphasis on impeachment proceedings for the failure and the government shut down? Waiting and keeping the two issues separate will help the Dem's with talking points.

major shut down in November once again.

And Yes the Speaker is playing this close to the vest. The Markets are very aware of this coming down the road.

There was to be a meeting of Rethugs and Ponzi Don this past week just on this issue alone, anything or anybody here if it happened.

Going on behind the scenes. I never imagined it would be so difficult to get rid of a dud president. But then again it took forever to get rid of Nixon.

Not McConnell, not Ponzi Don,not the Rethug Party. Every Budget bill starts in the Budget Sub Committees which there are several, and My guess is,What the Speaker refer's to as the Appropriators have done their DD and most likely have a Outline in place only waiting for various Committees to submit their Dollar amounts and any Language which they deem necessary.

McConnell and his Gang of clueless Idiots know darn well the House is in the Drivers Seat this time around and if McConnell and his crew want a shut down, well they can kiss their sorry asses good bye for 5 generations to come. Of Course Ponzi Don will talk shut down and play his bogus games only to fold like a cheap tent.
