Investigators say missing University of Utah student MacKenzie Lueck has died -- and they have arrested a Salt Lake City man who police say killed her and burned her body.

"I will not be saying the killer's name again," Brown said. ... Lueck's family released a brief statement thanking police and others who helped with the investigation.
Lueck, a 23-year-old University of Utah student, has been missing since June 17, when she arrived back in Salt Lake City from California, where she was attending her grandmother's funeral. Her parents reported her missing on June 20 and the search since then has drawn national attention.
....
In an interview, Brown said, with Ajayi claimed he texted Lueck on June 16 at about 6 p.m. but had no further contact with her. He stated he didnt know what Lueck looked like and said he hadnt seen photos or online profile. despite having those photos himself. ... Witnesses observed him burning something using gas on June 17 and 18 in his backyard. Police conducted a forensic excavation. I don't want this to turn into victim-shaming, but ... meeting someone in a park at 3:00 a.m.?

In any event -- heartbreaking.

(69,853 posts)she would meet someone in a park at 3:00 a.m.
"No."
The woman in the cubicle is only a few years older, if that many, than MacKenzie Lueck. She's college educated, like MacKenzie.

(6,568 posts)Hookup culture is a thing. 3AM rendezvous, especially amongst horny college kids is quite normal. It was normal in 2001 (when I was a horny college kid), its even more normal now.
The vast majority of people on dating sites arent scumbags.

(2,654 posts)I don't care if she was on Tinder or a Sugar Baby/Sugar Daddy site (as it appears she was).
However, using those sites does increase the chance of meeting a creep. I've got plenty of scary stories from both male and female friends who used Tinder, Bumble and other dating apps ranging from a whole lot of guys who happen to be in 'open marriages' to guys being extorted for money by their 'dates.'

(10,478 posts)in college you just do stupid stuff. I am the most responsible, non-risk taker youll ever meet, and in college I did something so stupid I still cringe 40 years later. It was similar but not the same as what this girl did, and Yep, my burning body could have ended up in a ditch along a rural road. I was lucky, as Im sure màny young woman are, after all most us us dont turn up smoldering by the roadside. Unfortunately, this poor woman was not.
There but for the grace of god go a lot of us.

(3 posts)A person who is obsessed with perfection is a non-social animal. This type of person does not see others per say, only the faults as perceived by him. Trying to get along with others in the 'normal' way causes friction in his head and ultimately leads him to do extreme things. I think.

(20,005 posts)Salt Lake will never get over that one. And here is a mother beautiful blond Salt Lake young woman kidnapped.
Salt Lake is a city with a lot of undergoing stuff going on. On the surface is this beautiful city full of moral dedicated church people.
But there is a dark underside . There was sex trafficking going on when I left in 1970. There was a healthy drug trade .
It sounds like this was a person who got sucked into some kind of really dangerous stuff. It happens there.
