WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration said late on Friday it was issuing final rules to suspend a 2016 Obama administration regulation that more than doubled penalties for automakers failing to meet fuel efficiency requirements.
Congress in 2015 ordered federal agencies to adjust a wide range of civil penalties to account for inflation and, in response, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under President Barack Obama issued rules to eventually raise fines to $14 from $5.50 for every 0.1 mile per gallon of fuel that new cars and trucks consume in excess of the required standards.
Automakers protested the hike, saying it could increase industry compliance costs by $1 billion annually.
After a group of states and environmental groups filed suit, the Trump administration began the process of formally undoing the Obama regulation and first proposed the freeze in 2018.

If we are really serious about reducing fossil fuel usage, substantial increases in gasoline and diesel taxes are the only way to go.
Every manufacturer offers electric and fuel efficient hybrids for sale; unfortunately with gas at < $3 per gallon, customers are shunning them in favor of Trucks and SUV/Crossovers.
Fining automakers for consumers preferences on vehicles instead of buying fuel efficient cars, only results in those fines being passed on to all customers and not doing a lick for the environment.

(5,103 posts)We did it on smog equipment and testing and we will do it for keeping the mileage standards high.
Automakers know that to ignore California is suicide for their brand and will not build two versions of a car for America.
Dump may change the law, but the wheels are already in motion for the next generation of transportation regardless of what the orange ass says.
Besides, He's a New Yorker! He doesn't now or probably has never driven anything. Look at the pic of him in the truck.
Does he even have a drivers license?
On edit: Cal just raised the gas tax by 8 cents making the average around $3.85 a gal.

The Silver Cloud was one of the early major vintage cars young Trump purchased. Photos of him with it, perched proudly on it in front of a palm-lined drive, are all over the internet.
The highly collectible V8 Silver Cloud was the signature car Rolls-Royce made from 1955 to 1966it was the car in the production chronology between the Silver Dawn and the Silver Shadow. The car had a four-speed automatic transmission and a top speed of more than 100 mph, which at the time was top notch, especially for six cylinders. RM Sothebys sold a droptop version of one for more than $1.3 million at its Amelia Island auction in March, though a coupe took far less$264,000in 2015.

This was one of the last cars Trump got to drive regularly before assuming presidential office. The $500,000 sedan is currently Rollss biggest ride, with a massive V12, 453-horsepower engine and a butter-smooth, six-speed transmission.
Virtually all of the cars are heavily bespoked on purchase, and Trumps black one was likely no different. The standard models offer seating for four or five, with thick lambswool carpeting, a cocoon-quiet cabin, and umbrellas inserted in the heavy, standard-issue, wood-paneled doors.
The '56 Silver Cloud is actually pretty high-class. It's out of character for Trump.
