NEW YORK -- Authorities say a widespread power shortage in Manhattan has left businesses without electricity, elevators stuck and subway cars stalled. Power reportedly went out early Saturday evening at much of Rockefeller Center and reached the Upper West Side.
The AMC Lincoln Square 13 movie theater on the Upper West Side, the entire Cineplex was evacuated.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority tweeted that there were outages at various underground stations. The MTA is working with Con Edison to determine the cause.
Con Edison did not immediately respond to phone messages, and it was not clear how far the outages reached. The outage comes on the anniversary of the 1977 New York City outage that left most of the city without power.

27,000 Customers Lose Power as Electrical Failure Hits Manhattan's Upper West Side

The New York Fire Department said it was responding to reports of people stuck in elevators as a power failure hit the Upper West Side of Manhattan on Saturday evening, according to the authorities and social media reports. Con Edison's website showed about 27,000 customers were without power as of 7:30 p.m. It was not immediately clear how widespread the power failure was but social media reports showed multiple subway stations shrouded in darkness.
The reports appeared to show most of the problems occurring on the Upper West Side between 50th and 70th Streets. The utility Con Edison showed reports of multiple failures in that area, with some reports extending as far east as Fifth Avenue. "We're getting reports of power outages in station complexes throughout Manhattan," the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said on Twitter. "We're working to identify causes and keep trains moving."
The New York City Subway system on Twitter said it was working with Con Edison "to determine the root cause of the ongoing power failure, which is affecting Midtown and the Upper West Side."
The Fire Department said it was responding to a transformer fire and "smoke in multiple buildings" on the West Side but could not immediately provide a specific location or whether the transformer fire was connected to the cause of the power failure. Images on Twitter showed darkened subway stations and inoperable traffic lights.

The big story out there was all the looting that went on. A week or two later our town had a short blackout. As soon as the lights in the office went out, one wise guy yelled in the dark, "grab your stuff, George is going to loot!" EVERYONE broke out in laughter.
Incidentally, that was also the summer of "Son of Sam". He was arrested during one of my trips back to NYC. That Monday morning when I went back to work, the same guy said "What are you doing here, I thought they arrested Son of Sam".

(141,926 posts)A power failure struck the West Side of Manhattan on Saturday evening, plunging subway stations into darkness, stalling trains, stranding people in elevators and for a time leaving parts of Times Square without its customary bright lights, according to the authorities.
Con Edison said that about 42,000 customers were without power, mainly on the West Side. The Fire Department said the failures stretched from 72nd Street to the West 40s, and from Fifth Avenue to the Hudson River.
Unfortunately, we do not have an estimated restoration at this time, Con Edison said. Our crews are working as quickly and safely as they can to restore service.
The New York City Council speaker, Corey Johnson, said on Twitter that there had been a major disturbance at Con Edisons 49th Street substation, and that the utility was working to fix it. He said the A, C, F, D and M subway lines were affected.

(38,726 posts)I bet power will be back on in a couple of hours. Subways and elevators are the issue, but again, I think it will be over very soon. (my opinion only, )

(6,684 posts)We put two men on the moon fifty years ago, we have robots on Mars, and self-driving cars are on the increase. But elevators don't have a back-up power source to get people to the ground floor, or at least to the nearest floor?
