An Illinois man has been charged with a hate crime after police said he yelled racist slurs at a Hispanic motorcyclist and chased him while holding an ice pick during a wild road rage incident this week.

Authorities said the victim was riding his motorcycle Wednesday morning in Gurnee, a village just north of Chicago, when a 2009 Hyundai SUV “abruptly” changed lanes and cut him off. The 57-year-old motorcyclist, who was displaying a Mexican flag on the bike, then tried to take down the white man’s license plate number when the driver pulled over and confronted him, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said the SUV driver, identified as Gurnee resident Joseph Zens, began yelling anti-Mexican slurs and expletives at the victim, told him to go back to his country and began chasing him with an ice pick in his hand.

The victim was able to get back on his motorcycle before being struck with the ice pick and immediately called 911 for help.

12. Actually, I have and use several. For breaking up ice on the boat.

A cooler full of cold bagged ice will freeze solid. They are ones my father used when we would stop by the Ice House and buy 50lb blocks of ice on the way to fish camp on the gulf coast. Before bagged ice in Louisiana.

Now carrying one to use as a weapon, well, not so much.

Just glad the guy did not pull a gun. And after his conviction will not be able to legally own one. Although suspect he is already a convicted felon.
