El Paso hospital forced to call out Trump's lie that surgeons left the operating room to see him

Source: raw story

Published 1 min ago on August 22, 2019

President Donald Trump bragged that he got an overwhelming welcome from Ohio and Texas when he went to visit survivors of the mass shootings before his latest vacation. Now, however, El Paso’s University Medical Center is being forced to dispute the president’s account of events.

“Not only did they meet with me, they were pouring out of the room. The doctors were coming out of the operating rooms. There were hundreds and hundreds of people all over the floor. You couldn’t even walk on it. So, you know, there’s a lot to happen,” Trump told reporters on the White House lawn Wednesday.

“At no time did, or would, physicians or staff leave active operating rooms during the presidential visit. Our priority is always patient care,” UMC spokesman Ryan Mielke told ABC-7.

The only survivor of the mass shooting who met with the president was the baby whose parents shielded her body, dying in the process. No one else wanted to meet with Trump.

1. Anyone who's had surgery -- or knows someone who has -- understands a surgeon can't

leave his/her patients until that patient has been closed up and the wounds attended by surgical nurses.

To leave patients in the middle of surgery to take a glimmer of Fearless Leader is the fastest way to be liable for malpractice, short of intentional malice. Why Trump would claim something that obvious proves that he's insane.

I am a retired OR nurse. A surgeon CAN leave the room. There is no rule preventing him from doing so. Although if he does it often, or without valid reason, the team working with him or the Anesthesiologist CAN report him. That has been done as well.

9. Wouldn't they have to scrub in again?

Which takes like 10 minutes?

Also why would the secret service allow a crowd to gather to the point where they blocked the corridors? Presumably their guidelines require that exit paths and sightlines be maintained at all times.

Depending on the product(s) used a scrub can take anywhere from 3-7 minutes these days. On cases where hardware, or devices are implanted, the scrub may be longer per Drs instructions.

The ONLY people allowed in the OR unit besides those who work there, are with federal agencies (occasionally local) and rarely an outside film crew. No more than 2, must change into scrubs and cover their hair and shoes. They are NOT allowed into the OR suite itself. They come escorted by hospital security (usually the chief) and their weapons are locked in the safe with the drugs until they leave. There would be no crowd blocking the corridor. I have worked in some ORs were rules are lax but NOT security. There are separate protocols for mass shootings or terrorists situations like the OKC bombing.

The ONLY exception to this rule is if the hospital is designated for the POTUS. Each hospital on the list, all level 1 trauma centers, must have a team dedicated to the POTUS. You must be vetted and you will be given a security clearance. Anytime AF1 crosses into your airspace, the team must be fully available (not doing other cases) and the largest trauma suite is held open. If this is at 2am, then you are there standing and waiting at 2am until the all clear is given.

IIRC, there can be up to 6 SS agents accompanying the POTUS. They have all been briefed on OR policy and sterile technique The last thing we need to worry about is if they are dressed correctly, standing in the way or are about to touch something they shouldn't. 2 from this group will enter the OR suite. None of them give up any weapons. The OR is cleared of all unnecessary personnel the remainder of the hospital goes on lockdown. All in coming patients are diverted.

BTW - if anyone is considering a nursing career, might I suggest you look into Forensic Nursing. That would have been my speciality had it been available when I trained. These are nurses/detectives trained specifically to go into ERs and ORs to preserve any evidence that is usually contaminated during the normal course of treating a victim or suspect.

7. I'm never quite sure: Does he know he's full of shit?

Does he really believe that surgeons were leaving the operating rooms to come see him, or is all of this part of the elaborate comedy routine he puts on for his naive fans? There were times in the past when it was 100% clear to me that he viewed his supporters as suckers and was deeply amused by their loyalty to him (that was around the time when he made the shoot someone on 5th avenue remarks). Now? I'm not so sure... I think he really does view himself as a savior now.

Any person who had any complications during his/her surgery that day could sue (and subpoena dRump as a witness).
