(Reuters) - The brother of U.S. gymnastics star Simone Biles was arrested and charged with murder as the accused shooter who killed three people at a New Year’s Eve party in Cleveland, law enforcement agencies said on Friday.

Tevin Biles-Thomas, 24, of Cleveland, was being held at the Liberty County Jail in Hinesville, Georgia on six counts of murder, three of voluntary manslaughter, five of felonious assault and a single count of perjury, according to a joint statement from the Cleveland Division of Police and Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office.

His arraignment at Cleveland’s Cuyahoga County Justice Center, where a grand jury indicted him on the criminal charges, was set for Sept. 13.

Biles-Thomas was part of an “uninvited group” that entered the New Year’s Eve house party, leading to an altercation with guests and shots fired, prosecutors said.

She just completed some remarkable gymnast feats recently, and that is her achievement that should not be diminished because her brother was foolish with what appears he did with his life.

Two young people on such radically different life paths is not unheard of, but it is not usually this drastic. Usually more of a James Earl Carter, President - Ambassador - Philanthropist.

With the Internet the connection between Simone would have come out sooner or later. Since the murders were in January I am surprised it took this long.

I hope it doesn't rattle her in any way. And it probably won't. Again the murders happened in January and she has been stunning and thrilling us all.

Tevin and Simone grew up together in Ohio and were adopted by their grandparents⁠, who Simone refers to as mom and dad⁠.

"My biological mom was suffering from drug and alcohol abuse and she was in and out of jail," the gold medalist has shared. "My parents saved me. They've set huge examples of how to treat other people, and they've been there to support me since day one. There's nothing I could say to them to thank them enough."

In 2017, the athlete, 22, shared a series of snaps on Twitter of her posing alongside her big brother.

"I got a call from a social worker, and my response was 'Send them to me,'?" he said. "That would have been in July or August 1999. We finally got them in March 2000. The oldest was 10, her brother was 8, Simone was 3 and Adria, the youngest, was 13 months."

It was, as Adam Biles recalls, a difficult adjustment.

"They moved in the year that my brother and I were about to leave high school, and my parents were going to be empty-nesters, and along come four kids," he said. "It was crazy. It was hectic."

Shanon Biles' parental rights, and those of Simone's biological father, eventually were terminated. The two older children were adopted by Ronald Biles' sister, and Simone and Adria were adopted by Ronald and Nellie Biles.

Still, they did manage to keep the family as together as they could.
