MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Australia will invest A$150 million ($101 million) in its companies and technology to help U.S. President Donald Trumps bid for a moon landing by 2024 and subsequent U.S. missions to Mars, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said over the weekend.
Morrison, visiting NASA headquarters in Washington, said the five-year investment plan would help businesses support U.S. automation systems, build equipment for space craft and play a role in mineral exploration.
Were backing Australian businesses to the moon, and even Mars, and back, Morrison said.
The announcement came after Morrison made a state visit to the White House on Friday, with the red carpet rolled out, signaling Australias strong ties with the United States after a period of tense relations with China.

(20,400 posts)I'd say Morrison has sealed his fate by 'partnering' in anything with Trump. We tend to be a pretty pragmatic crowd, who call bullshit when we see it. And this is bullshit.

But why is my country, Australia, wasting money like this?
And why are people taking this seriously? Mars is a no go area for humans. Too far, too expensive, too hostile.

Yet they've got $150 million to invest in lunar exploration.
Maybe they're hoping the experience of building a moon base in a lifeless, dead landscape will help them build survival bunkers for their 1% here on Earth.
