Macron Warns Of Nato 'Brain Death' As US Turns Its Back On Allies

Source: The Guardian

French president also says Europe is in danger of disappearing geopolitically. Emmanuel Macron has said Nato is in the throes of “brain death” and European countries can no longer rely on the US to defend its allies.

“What we are currently experiencing is the brain death of Nato,” the French president told the Economist in an interview. “You have no coordination whatsoever of strategic decision-making between the United States and its Nato allies. None. You have an uncoordinated aggressive action by another Nato ally, Turkey, in an area where our interests are at stake.”

Asked whether he still believed in the “collective defence” stipulations of article five of Nato’s founding treaty, under which an attack against one member is considered an attack against all members, Macron answered: “I don’t know.”

Nato “only works if the guarantor of last resort functions as such. I’d argue that we should reassess the reality of what Nato is in the light of the commitment of the United States,” he said...

Nato can survive.
It is my hope that the last few years will serve as a reminder of all we have to lose and wake up Americans to the fact that our democracy and the idea of America, along with our commitment to our allies need to be protected and upheld always. We must be vigilant.
Lots of housecleaning to do first.

They don't want to spend the money or devote other resources to it.

They'd prefer different sorts of systems, depending on which technology the government subsidizes.

They can't agree on strategic priorities. On the one hand, Putin/Russia bad. On the other hand, let's not put NATO forces in places that Russia says shouldn't have NATO forces there, and let's try to make sure that we have really good trade relations with them. But Putin/Russia bad.

NATO is a political/economic thing for most of the Western European countries; for the Eastern European countries, it's important, they think, for their defense and independence.

But with a new President there can be a unified approach and likely containment, at least for awhile. Then there is also Saudi Arabia to contend with as well. And, no, endless war is not the answer.
