To weather impeachment hearings, White House looks to put witnesses on trial

Some GOP allies of President Donald Trump are looking to the Kavanaugh hearings as a model for what they view as a successful effort to chip away at a potentially damaging witness's credibility.
WASHINGTON Ahead of the first public testimony of the impeachment inquiry next week, the White House and key Hill Republicans are discussing a defense of President Donald Trump that is heavy on offense, with a focus on dismissing and discrediting witnesses whose testimony may be damaging to the president.
If folks question the motivations and credibility of the president as we go through this, its possible that the same standard could apply to them, said an administration official involved in the process granted anonymity to speak candidly about strategy, who said the approach had been used during past impeachment defenses.

(7,573 posts)the released depositions,,these witnesses in the open hearings are not going to be pushed around or be intimidated.....these are professional patriots who have guts.....the WH will see their strategy blow up in their faces. Fiona Hill really made the Republican lawyer look like a fool.

(7,402 posts)The House will not permit chaos to take over and the Chief Justice presides over the Senate trial. Yes, motivations will be presented as state of mind questions so they will look at party of registration but that still doesn't establish a state of mind. If that was the case then every government worker is suspect on that grounds because they could not be trusted to be professional on the job. That preposterous. Even in the case of the two FBI agents having the extramarital affair that sent text messages negative to Trump there was no evidence in their professional conduct that they were anything but professional in all ways. They followed the evidence. (Can Barr say that?). I just see problems with the Republicans getting much traction going after "motivations and credibility" because that would be an attack on our entire federal system.
