A Californian economist loves neoliberalism. When Chileans started protesting it, he opened fire on

Source: Washington Post

John Cobin, a U.S.-born economist and former member of a neo-Confederate group, is so passionate about a free market — and about Chile — that he’s devoted the past two decades to marrying the two.

But Cobin’s unusual story took a violent turn this weekend, when he confronted a group of protesters who have paralyzed Chile in recent weeks in mass demonstrations against income inequality and government economic policies.

The 56-year-old was arrested Sunday after police said he repeatedly fired a gun into a crowd of protesters, seriously injuring at least one person.

“I did not do anything wrong,” Cobin said in a video filmed just before his arrest. “It was a very dangerous, very scary time for me. Thankfully, I had my gun to be able to defend myself."

2nd amendment rights.

Since he's a US citizen no doubt the US Embassy will try to make
sure he is well taken care of, and maybe even bring him home.

And since he adheres to the GOP ideology, he will be defended, not
like Jamal Khashoggi or the US reporter for the NY Times, Declan Walsh,
in Egypt.
The NY Times had to rely on Irish diplomats to get Declan Walsh out of Egypt
because they were afraid Pendejo45 would not help.

in the League of the South, a neo-Confederate hate group, and failed in his libertarian bid for a U.S. congressional seat in South Carolina. Days before the election, he was arrested on charges of domestic violence.

In Chile, however, he emerged as a prolific conservative commentator, hosting a talk radio show called “Red Hot Chile,” traveling to every major town around the country and remarrying a Chilean woman. He dubbed himself the “biggest neoliberal in the entire country.” (Chilean media outlets would later describe him as a white supremacist.) ...

MARCH/APRIL 2014
STEVEN BODZIN

... Welcome to Galt’s Gulch Chile, a libertarian refuge from the coming economic, social, and political collapse of the United States. The would-be free-market utopia, named after the mountain redoubt of the protagonist of Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged, is taking advance payments (Bitcoins gladly accepted) for parcels on its 11,000 acres.

Joining Johnson, the project’s managing partner, are three prospective buyers: a retiree from Oregon, a California-based expert in moving assets offshore, and another retiree who doesn’t want to give much in the way of personal data. “Oh, the NSA’s here too?” he says the first time he sees my audio recorder. The men talk of a coming financial meltdown caused by the Federal Reserve, followed by a Homeland Security police state. They’re ready to get out with their silver, guns, and organic honey — but not quite ready to sacrifice fast internet, access to an international airport, and a time zone convenient for Skyping with the doomed sheeple back home. Throw in low taxes, privatized social security, and a Mediterranean climate, and you have Chile ...

Down at a ranch house in the valley, we join Galt’s Gulch Chile’s top promoter, Jeff Berwick, who’s mingling with dozens of investors and potential customers. Acre-and-a-quarter lots start at $48,500. Berwick writes the Dollar Vigilante financial newsletter and appears frequently on investment talk shows, telling people to get out of North America ASAP. “I expect a complete monetary system collapse in the next 5 or 10 years,” he told Canada’s CBC ...

If Galt’s Gulch isn’t your scene, Freedom Orchard is right next door. Its founder is John Cobin, a genial expat who cranks out an endless stream of articles, op-eds, and episodes of his Red Hot Chile podcast in which he extols the country’s low taxes, rigid anti-abortion laws, and traditional gender roles. Cobin ran for Congress in South Carolina in 2006 but was arrested for domestic violence days before the vote. (The charges were dropped.) His vice president of international sales, an organic farmer named Frank Szabo, lost a race for sheriff in New Hampshire in 2012 after saying he wouldn’t rule out use of deadly force against abortion doctors. He later apologized and said he abhors violence ...

Cobin is a highly controversial figure ... He <has> praised Augusto Pinochet’s legacy .. and highlighted the economic reforms introduced by the so-called Chicago Boys, the same initiatives currently critised by Chileans.

I believe he is a Naturalized Chilean Citizen, with a Chilean Passport. He ran this weird Move to Chile package, which costs probably $40-60k, and it sounded to good to be true. (It takes a long time for a Expatriate to get Residency in Chile, let alone Citizenship) The really tough thing to get is a Bank Account with a Bank like Banco de Chile..

Cobin wasn't like Paul Schäfer of Colonia Dignidad infamy, but he was getting there. He pushed his own semi Real Estate Scam, "Freedom Orchards" in a place outside of Santiago de Chile, on the road to Valparaíso de Chile. It most likely didn't have the water or wells to support a planned right wing libertarian community.. nor would the local communa agree to lots that He and Frank Szabo wanted to make some money..

20. The Weird Antics of John Cobin

Nov 2019

I have been following John Cobin, and his actions and antic in Chile for over six years. I found out about him, when I was reading about the Galt's Gulch Chile debacle in 2014. I used to work in Chile, and as much as it is pretty friendly to Gringos, a beautiful country, lots of fun. It is not the US. It is still a Socially Conservative, family oriented, nuance country. It can also be very bureaucratic, difficult to set up a business for Gringos, etc. etc. If a Gringo/Gringa is working in Chile, one should respect the cultural nuances, learn Castellano, and be respectful, no matter if some of the things looks upon backwards, like the machismo that is still prevalent in Chilean Society. However, compare to the bureaucratic nightmare of Argentina, Chile was a nice place to work and live.

When I heard that he had this "Expatriate Residency Program/Package" it raised my eyebrows that it sounded like a scam. Given trying to get a bank account in Chile is probably more difficult that than getting a place to live or permanent residency..

John Cobin is a right wing Libertarian. The Libertarian Movement has many John Cobins in it. Cobin went up to a Libertarian get together called FreedomFest, that he met an associate of Jeff Berwick, who acts like a James Bond Villain, with a semi sleazy Dollar Vigilante Website, living in Acapulco, Mexico. Jeff Berwick has connections to people like Laura Southern, and even the Crying Nazi, Christopher Cantwell has a small part in this drama, given he started out as a hard core Libertarian. One of John Cobin's partners at his semi real estate scam near Curacaví Chile called "Freedom Orchard" (Vergel Libertad), was Frank Szabo who ran as a Sheriff in New Hampshire as another right wing anti abortion Libertarian.

Let's just say that John Cobin was an accident waiting to happen. He did many press interviews in Chile, in which he blasted Liberals, or basically said Liberals/Progressive/Leftists were the same as Communists. He praised Augusto Pinochet, even though after Pinochet was found to swindle hundred of millions of dollars to enrich himself and his family, he was ostracized before his death. It not a smart move for a Gringo to praise Pinochet in present day Chile, given the US involvement in the 1973 Chilean Coup. Plus, from my own experience, many in Chileans society hate Pinochet. (The coup and the military dictatorship terrorized thousands to millions of Chileans, like my friends, who had guns pointed to their heads to tell them where are they hiding the communists in their house) Former President Michelle Bachelet was tortured along with her Army General Father, before she went into exile..

The wheeling dealing nature of John Cobin, his warped Libertarian Beliefs, made it that, he thought he pretend he was in the Southern Part of the US. The Shooting in Reñaca by John Cobin, could had been avoided. The Yellow Vests in Chile, were kind of looked upon as Carabineros friendly, or supportive of the Piñera Government. He couldn't load his ammo in his gun, as he did on Nov. 10th, 2019. Only 13 Chileans in the Country outside of active Carabineros and active branches of the Chilean Armed Forces can carry loaded firearms in the country. Chile doesn't have a second amendment, and John Cobin is lying that he was going to a shooting range in Viña del Mar, when the shooting range was closed on Sunday. I am guessing he was trying to pick a fight with the demonstrators. (Reñaca is a nice beach town north of Viña Del Mar, with some good restaurants on the coast, which had many broken windows after Cobin left, and the demonstrators went nuts)

I was a little surprise but not really that he was the shooter. His little video he made before the PDI arrested him, was trying to spin his version of events. The videos showed, he drove away from the demonstrators, got out, was trying to shoots some demonstrators, and he shot someone in leg. It was incredibly stupid and reckless what he has done. Because Chile is a Civil Law Country, he is going to be locked up for 90 days, and he most likely will has sort of Attempted Murder charge thrown against him.

If I remember correctly, he renounced his US Citizenship, and he is now a naturalized Chilean. He can't be deported. However, I don't see how he can live in Chile, given he is now has become a huge villain in Chile. I thought an Ugly American like Ken Johnson who ran the "Galt's Gulch Chile" project to the ground, was a vilified, given he didn't pay many Chileans for their work, but right now John Cobin has worse PR. He is most likely going to serve a couple years in prison. Once he loaded his gun in his truck, he was committing some serious criminal offenses in Chile..
