Deval Patrick Joins the 2020 Race: 'This Won't Be Easy, and It Shouldn't Be'

Source: New York Times

Former Gov. Deval Patrick of Massachusetts officially entered the presidential race on Thursday, adding an 18th candidate and an 11th-hour twist to a turbulent Democratic primary with less than three months to go before the Iowa caucuses.

Mr. Patrick’s announcement, which he had signaled this week, came in the form of a video he released early Thursday morning. In it, he offered an explanation of why he was joining the race now after having passed on a bid for the White House a year ago, saying he was running for people who “feel left out” and want a future “not built by somebody better than you, not built for you, but built with you.”

“I admire and respect the candidates in the Democratic field,” he said. “They bring a richness of ideas and experience and a depth of character that makes me proud to be a Democrat. But if the character of the candidates is an issue in every election, this time is about the character of the country. This time is about whether the day after the election, America will keep her promises. This time is about more than removing an unpopular and divisive leader, as important as that is, but about delivering instead for you.”

Mr. Patrick, 63, who served two terms as governor and is one of the highest-profile black leaders in the Democratic Party, is expected to appear on “CBS This Morning” later Thursday and offer additional details about his run.

anything else. They probably sense some weakness in Biden's campaign as well, but I think Biden supporters would probably migrate to Buttigieg or Klobacher instead of either of them.

But, as Jennifer Rubin wisely suggested for better uses of Bloomberg's billions, their money and time could be put to much more constructive use than (hopefully futile) vanity projects, namely (a) supporting programs to require that all high-school students pass the equivalent of the citizenship exam in order to graduate; (b) support the Democratic presidential nominee (which won't be either one of them) and Dem candidates for the House and Senate; (c) support initiatives to confer automatic voter registration and vote-by-mail initiatives; (d) buy Fox news; (e)revive and sustain local newspapers.

No candidate can win primary or Ge without AA voters. Bloomberg is a total wash there and as far as Patrick, why would the AA voters not pick Booker or Harris if the just wanted an AA to run.

Those that know Patrick best had this to say
bostonglobe.com/metro/2019/11/… His record in corporate America has come under close scrutiny since he left office; the conclusions that have been reached won’t play well in this electorate. I just don’t see how his history with Ameriquest & Bain Capital gets spun into a net positive.

with their late entries - that the current field isn't good enough. In reality, they'll be a minor distraction, but our original candidates don't need their air time diluted now that the field is (was) winnowing down.

I don't see how they'd ever qualify to even get in the debates. If they really want to help the party and get rid of tRump, throw their money and support at our existing candidates.
