North Korea says it won't give Trump a summit for free

Source: ABC/AP

North Korea on Monday responded to a tweet by U.S. President Donald Trump that hinted at another summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying it has no interest in giving Trump further meetings to brag about unless it gets something substantial in return.

The statement by Foreign Ministry adviser Kim Kye Gwan is the latest call by North Korea for U.S. concessions ahead of an end-of-year deadline set by Kim Jong Un for the Trump administration to offer mutually acceptable terms for a deal to salvage nuclear diplomacy.

Following a U.S. decision over the weekend to call off joint military exercises with South Korea to create space for diplomacy with the North, Trump in a tweet urged Kim Jong Un to “act quickly, get the deal done” and hinted at another summit between them, saying “See you soon!”

But Kim Kye Gwan reiterated his government’s stance that Washington must discard what North Korea sees as “hostile” policies to keep the negotiations alive.

Who holds the cards in his relationships with Kim Jong Un, Putin, Erdogan and Xi? Trump huffed and puffed and tried to look strong, but he's given up everything. He even canceled military exercises with South Korea to soothe Kim Jong Un. Has the US ever been in this weakened a state?

Here's what Trump gave his bromance last time they had a date. Remember Trump visualized beautiful beaches on the North Korean coastline dotted with Trump Towers for sure.

So Trump shit on our allies and ancestors once again! What do you think he'll give up this time?

There's never been a deal maker like Donald Trump - in a sense that is true I suppose. He got owned by a North Korean dictator, no other president could say that.

Jong Un must think drumpf is the dumbest and most stupid person ever created. He's actually not very wrong, but I sure hope the people around him will stop another instance of the mightiest nation in the world groveling before the little pissant.

Kim, giving him the valuable boon of a meeting with the US president without getting anything of value in return. Now the idea that a meeting with the U.S. president has such value has been completely upended, and the president has been cast as the pathetic beggar who needs to have his stature propped up by a meeting with akin Jong Un.

North Korea has no interest in giving Trump further meetings to brag about unless it gets something substantial in return - shouldn't the United States be saying this about Kim and North Korea instead of the other way around?

The main problem is the "all or nothing," or whole bundle approach on the US side v. the step by step approach that is regarded by the phalanxes of hard liners in the US as "appeasement." So the fundamental obstacle or deadlock in the talks never really changes.

The hardline view is really antithetical to change other than regime change in support of the institutional interests that exist and profit from the status quo of maintaining the Korean conflict indefinitely.
