Land affected by Keystone pipeline leak bigger than thought

Source: MPR News

A crude oil spill from the Keystone pipeline in eastern North Dakota has turned out to have affected almost 10 times the amount of land as first reported, a state regulator said Monday.

North Dakota environmental scientist Bill Suess said the leak reported on Oct. 29 is now estimated by state regulators to have affected about 209,100 square feet of land near Edinburg. State regulators had said the leak affected about 22,500 square feet of land.

Calgary, Alberta-based TC Energy, formerly known as TransCanada, estimated its pipeline leaked an estimated 383,000 gallons of oil. Suess said that estimate has not changed.

10x more than originally reported. If I ever missed my anniversary by 10 days, my wife would be 'ote' of her mind!

Posts 7 and 8 in the following thread take a rough stab at how much it didn't make sense:

Funny how it always turns out to be more.

Wow, yet another lie about the volume of oil spilled and the area of land affected. Woo, colour me shocked and amazed. If oil companies can't get oil from point A to point B without it spilling, maybe they shouldn't be shipping oil. They've said plenty of times "spills will happen!" but conveniently leave out that they happen, like, every time.

383,000 gallons of anything is a puddle 500 feet wide, 100 feet long, and 1 foot deep. (Rounding down slightly)
