Melania Trump booed at youth opioid summit in Baltimore
Source: CNN
(CNN)First lady Melania Trump took her "Be Best" initiative to the Baltimore area on Tuesday, where she was met with a chorus of boos from attendees at a youth summit aimed at raising awareness about the nation's opioid crisis. The heckling lasted for about one minute, according to CNN's Kate Bennett, who was in the room. But the audience remained raucous, audibly speaking over her remarks throughout her brief speech to the B'More Youth Summit. Undeterred, the first lady pressed on. "Thank you to all of the students who are here. I am so proud of you for the bravery it takes to share that you have been strongly affected by the opioid epidemic in some way," she said above loud, persistent talking in the audience in an auditorium at University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
Earlier in November, the first lady was met with protesters during a visit to Boston Medical Center, located in the city's South End. Protesters on a grassy area in front of the building held signs and chanted, most decrying the immigration stance and policies of her husband, President Donald Trump. Those in the crowd were primarily hospital employees, upset that Melania Trump's visit would create a public photo opportunity aligning members of the Trump administration with Boston Medical Center, 30% of whose patients don't speak English as a primary language, according to the hospital's website.
In Baltimore on Tuesday, the first lady touted her work with "Be Best," which focuses on children's well-being, online safety and opioid abuse. "Promoting education and awareness on these issues will always be one of my top priorities. I am in this fight with you and I am fighting for you. I encourage you, if you are struggling with addiction right now, reach out for support -- whether it's a teacher, parent, friend, grandparent, coach or pastor, talk to an adult in your life that you trust. It is never too late to ask for help," she told the crowd. She was again loudly booed, and also cheered, as she departed the stage at the conclusion of her speech.
This is the first time the first lady has been publicly booed at a solo event, though the Trump administration has had strained relations with the city of Baltimore. The President called Baltimore a "rat and rodent infested mess" in a July tweet, specifically referring to the late Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings' district, which includes parts of Baltimore, as a place where "no human being would want to live."

Boo, shout at, disrupt (peacefully) - anything to let these cretins know that they are no longer welcome in our society.

(2,227 posts)Everybody makes choices they have to live with.
Melania chose to latch on to a disgusting pig (and got American citizenship for it), fuck him at least once (presto, Barron as an insurance policy) and have the bad luck of being set for life.
So Sad.
Barron (and to some degree, Tiffany) is the only one(s) who should have any degree of peace (my email is NOT a slap at Barron, he had no choice in the matter of being used as an insurance policy).
The rest of the treasonous spawn should be made to feel our disgust.
Civility is great in context. However, we MAY find ourselves tossing the last shovel of dirt onto the coffin in the grave of the Great American Democratic Experiment. At least we can hold our heads high and sniff, "at least we were civil and took the high road"...

(8,020 posts)while she spoke is proper for any reason. They could get up & leave, silently protest. ect..., not the kind of behavior we should be promoting for our kids.

People want to be acknowledged... its a basic social need. And acknowledgement wont come from silent protest, thanks to the media, which will magnify the loudest and most scandalous person.
Case in point: Trump himself. He was the loudest and flashiest of the candidates, he offered nothing of substance and polarized Americans... its the only legitimate reason hes potus right now.

(30,540 posts)no matter who the is president and it will be directed at them and their family, it's not going to be pretty. I don't think that those who think this is great will feel that way when the next Democratic President and family members are loudly booed and heckled.

(34,966 posts)Nobody is forced to run for POTUS, if you've made the decision to run for an office that has been tainted, and will remain tainted for a long time to come at the least, by this administration, then you can expect to be heckled and booed.
I think that next Democratic President will be able to keep a stiff upper lip about it though.

(14,483 posts)They know big pharma's goose is cooked over the opioid abuse issue, so no loss there and any action against addiction will win a few votes.
However, if they really gave a shit about human misery and violation of human rights, Be Best would be speaking up against:
* separation of refugee children from parents and brutality toward migrants and refugees.
* the murder and abuse of thousands of Kurds in northern Syria.
* defunding and/or demeaning our public schools, a system upon which our entire future rests.
* defunding or marginalization of even basic government health care in America.
etc., etc. (that list could be a mile long)
Melania knows if she spoke up on any of those issues, her ass would be back on the street.

And if she really does speak so many languages, then her English would be better... but it's not. She only speaks two languages and knows a few "travelers phrases" in French, German and Italian.

In my three years covering @FLOTUS
at events, that was the worst booing she has received at a public event where she has given solo remarks.

Of course, @realDonaldTrump
has had a complicated and at times tenuous relationship with the city of Baltimore. There was certainly no love lost for @FLOTUS

But I doubt she will. Shes part of the whole sick Trump machine and will blame everyone else except herself.
Feeling sorry for her robs her of agency and is also paternalistic. She has the ability and platform to do good yet decides to continue to support Trumps awful policies.

I dont blindly hate the President or the First Lady. I passionately resist them because I hate what they have done to our country. There is a difference.
P.S. Melania earned every single one of those boos that you are so upset about. Her silence is complicity. #MelaniaBooed
