Worry rises in military over Trump's decision-making

Source: cnn

By Barbara Starr and Nicole Gaouette Updated 7:44 PM ET, Wed November 27, 2019

Washington (CNN)Tensions that have been mounting for months between some of the nation's most senior military officers and President Donald Trump are boiling over after his decision to intervene in the cases of three service members accused of war crimes.
A long-serving military officer put it bluntly, telling CNN "there is a morale problem," and senior Pentagon officials have privately said they are disturbed by the President's behavior......................

.................................

Trump had upped the ante at a rally on Tuesday by issuing an extraordinary declaration that he took action in the face of "deep state" opposition. In fact, senior Pentagon officials had been unanimously opposed to the President's intervention because they believed it would undermine military discipline and order.

The President's comments and his intervention -- at the urging of Fox News commentators -- reflect another worry among military leaders that Trump continues to be influenced by the network in ways that encourage him to politicize the military, an institution that is meant to stay above the political fray.

Top military leaders say they are concerned about Trump's divisive rhetoric and politicization of the military. They also tell CNN they worry the President's mercurial management style -- often expressed through tweets -- may be undermining national security by making military planning increasingly difficult. ...............................................

Trump defends military pardons over objections from 'deep state' at Florida rally

https://www.cnn.com/2019/11/26/politics/trump-eddie-gallagher-rally/index.html

(CNN)President Donald Trump touted his move to intervene in the cases of three service members accused of war crimes at a campaign rally on Tuesday, framing the objections he faced from senior Pentagon officials as coming from the "deep state."

"Just this week I stuck up for three great warriors against the deep state. You know what I'm talking about," Trump said. "And so many people said, 'Sir, I don't think you should do that.' "
.......................

........................

The move -- along with Trump's pardons of Lt. Clint Lorance and Maj. Matthew Golsteyn, who had also faced war crimes allegations -- came despite objections from the Pentagon. Military leaders, including Defense Secretary Mark Esper, had warned Trump that intervening in the cases could potentially damage the integrity of the military justice system.

But during his rally in Florida on Tuesday, Trump argued that "people have to be able to fight."

"They can't think, 'Gee whiz, if I make a mistake' ... they wanted to put them in jail for 25 years," the President said.

"I will always stick up for our great fighters. People can sit there in air conditioned offices and complain, but it doesn't matter to me whatsoever," he said.

They can advise Dolt 45 until they're blue in the face. If he ignores their advice and issues a dunderheaded (but still lawful) order, they can either carry it out or resign in protest. They can't very tell just ignore him, because then you have the military just doing its own thing with no civilian leadership.

The only other way they can "fix it" is to stage a coup and depose him by force, which would be extremely bad news for all of us.

shithole "I'm smarter than the Generals", and dissing our allies, and much love for dictators, and the killing of our allies the Kurds, and pardoning war criminals and telling the "brass" basically to fuck off, and on and on . .

Dissing our veterans, et al.

Will they say "enough is enough" and arrest and remove him?

At what point will the sergeant-at-arms be activated, storm the White House, and rescue us from this dictator? How much are we supposed to tolerate until it happens?

Why do we have a sergeant-at-arms if he's not going to his job anyway?

Too many military members get their news on the Faux. It is aired on military installations everywhere. I speak from experience. When you are young, you are easily influenced by those who outrank you. You don't have time to fact check because you don't really care. All you know is the picture of your boss hanging on the wall and he is your leader. It's going to take some truth telling, fact checking and changing the channel before the forces will realize that they are being short changed by someone who really doesn't care about them and finds them expendable.
