US Congress Commits To Take Action On Climate Crisis, Despite Trump

Source: The Guardian

11 hrs. ago. Nancy Pelosi tells UN conference in Madrid that commitment is ‘iron-clad.’ The US will take action on greenhouse gases and engage with other countries on the climate emergency despite Donald Trump’s rejection of international cooperation, a delegation from the US Congress has told the UN climate conference in Madrid.

Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House, struck a defiant stance on Monday, declaring: “Congress’s commitment to action on the climate crisis is iron-clad. This is a matter of public health, of clean air, of clean water, of our children, of the survival of our economies, of the prosperity of the world, of national security, justice and equality. We now must deliver deeper cuts in emissions.”

Her rallying call came as developing countries accused the US president of “ecocide” and the UN secretary-general said the world’s biggest emitters were falling behind. Ministers and officials from more than 190 countries gathered in Madrid on Monday for the start of two weeks of talks aimed at ironing out technical details of the 2015 Paris agreement, which needs to be completed for nations to focus on the progress on cutting carbon emissions.

“We are outraged by the dithering and retreat of one of the most culpable polluters from the Paris agreement,” Lois Young, Belize’s permanent representative to the UN and chair of the Alliance of Small Island Developing States, told the conference. -More...

New movements are needed to replace/revamp the old and sometimes tired ones. If the supreme court is unconvinced of the Parkland's pleading presentations, I can see the climate change and gun safety youth movements melding together into something very effective. Movements continuously melding together is what it will take to effectively make push backs on the corporate boot heals on our necks. I expect we lose a few more battles before something really takes off in our favor.

I was a kid in the early 70's when the anti-war movement was popular and that was around the time of the first Earth day when there were many endangered species and it was triggered by a river fire on the Ohio River if I recall where the river caught fire from all the hazmat! That spawned the Clean Water Act and many other regulations that really changed things. Trump and his oil barons have caused considerable damage to the regulations in place.

My point is that they will merge because they have the same natural opponents. I have a gut feel that people are becoming woke now. They see the increased fires, more intense storms, people migrating away from coastal areas and are increasingly thinking about their children and grandchildren. Rest assured! It's gonna happen!

PS "boot heels" Freudian typo... there's some healing that's gonna be needed too!

Might take a few more movements/interests to join in, but once it becomes anti-establishment in general (and the 'question authority' stickers and shirts become popular again) some good changes will be made. I remember when wearing holes in my blue jeans meant something.

no way anything meaningful can happen until democrats have complete and absolute filibuster proof control of Congress and the Whitehouse.
