ATLANTA -- A federal judge is holding a hearing Monday on Georgia's planned mass purge of its voting rolls, following an emergency request from a voting rights group founded by Democrat Stacey Abrams.
U.S. District Judge Steve Jones had ruled earlier in the day that the purge should be placed on hold until a Thursday hearing, but he later decided to hold the hearing Monday afternoon.
The motion was filed by Fair Fight Action in U.S. District Court, just hours before the secretary of state's office planned to begin the purge of inactive voter registrations.
Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in October released a list of over 313,000 voters whose registrations were at risk of being canceled, about 4% of the state's total registered voters. Notices were mailed in November giving those voters 30 days to respond in order to keep their registration intact. A spokesman for the secretary of state's office said last week that the purge was set to begin Monday evening.

(17,031 posts)if the voter is aware his/her name is purged, can they re-register? Probably the vote purgers are creating barriers, but I hope people will try to re-register as soon as they find out they aren't. Maybe some of the enthusiasm to GOTV could be aimed at having people check their status and get it updated.

(12,609 posts)The way the current law is now, they have to mail you a notice. It comes with a prepaid postcard to send back. And you havent voted at all since the 2012 elections. I'm sure there are some on the list who HAVE, but again, you send back that card and its supposed to handle it. The older law wasnt as voter friendly.
The AJC did a survey of the list and found that black & white voters were represented in about the same proportions as the GA population.
My ex got one of the notices; she hasnt voted in over a decade. And I cant get her to care.

About 309,000 names were set to be erased from Georgias list of registered voters Monday night, a mass cancellation that a federal judge allowed to move forward.
A voting rights group, Fair Fight Action, said in federal court Monday that the registration cancellations target roughly 120,000 inactive voters who would otherwise be eligible to participate in elections but are being removed because they havent cast a ballot since at least 2012. The rest of the people on the cancellation list either moved from Georgia or mail sent to them by election officials was undeliverable.
By Tuesday morning, the number of registered voters in Georgia was set to shrink from 7.4 million to 7.1 million.
While all states are required by federal law to routinely update their voter lists, Georgias laws are stricter than most.Georgia is one of nine states with a law known as use it or lose it, which allows registrations to be canceled after voters fail to participate in elections for several years.
