Trump becomes third U.S. president to be impeached

Last edited Wed Dec 18, 2019, 10:37 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: Washington Post

The House voted to impeach President Trump for his conduct toward Ukraine and his refusal to cooperate with the inquiry after nearly 12 hours of debate Wednesday night, making him only the third president in U.S. history to receive that sanction.

Democrats had more than enough votes to approve the two articles of impeachment against Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, even with two Democratic defections on the first, three on the second and presidential candidate Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) voting "present" on both.

Wednesday's action will lead to a trial in the Republican-led Senate, where a two-thirds vote would be required to remove the president from office.

At the heart of the Democrats' case is the allegation that Trump tried to leverage a White House meeting and military aid, sought by Ukraine to combat Russian military aggression, to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to launch an investigation of former vice president Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden, as well as a probe of an unfounded theory that Kyiv conspired with Democrats to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.

Full headline: Trump impeachment vote live updates: Trump becomes third U.S. president to be impeached; second article of impeachment against Trump -- obstruction of Congress -- gains enough votes for adoption

Updated article -

BREAKING: The vote on the second article of impeachment came after the House adopted the first article against President Trump -- abuse of power -- on a largely party-line vote.

The second charge leveled against Trump came as the president has instructed senior administration officials not to cooperate with the impeachment inquiry.

Adoption of the articles sets the stage for a trial in the Republican-controlled Senate next month.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

Original article and headline -

Trump impeachment vote live updates: Trump becomes third U.S. president to be impeached; abuse of power article gains enough support as House roll call vote continues

BREAKING: The politically charged House vote came on the first article of impeachment leveled against President Trump -- abuse of power. Democrats accused the president of using the authority of his office to coerce a foreign leader to investigate a domestic political rival.

The House was poised to vote on a second article of impeachment -- obstruction of Congress -- as Trump has instructed senior administration officials not to cooperate with congressional investigations.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

you have to violate a lot of norms, offend a lot of people, make a lot of mistakes, be a bull in a china shop politically to be impeached in such a short time frame. Citizens, Americans, kids, politicians of both parties at all levels look to the president for the country's agenda and for leadership. Trump has destroyed everything. Just everything.

He would be impeached, and sent to leavenworth with all his merry minions, and every single last thing would be reversed and Hillary awarded the presidency.
All his crooked staff, family members, appointed judges, supreme court justices, cabinet members, EVERYTHING would be repealed or reversed.....

And you are right, it would be generations to right the wrong that has been done to the U.S.and Democracy.

But we aren't in a fair world, the Senate will quickly find him innocent and the Senate,Trump, DOJ, Supreme court, etc will get right back to destroying this nation and Democracy forever more, and installing a Tyrant Fascist Government.
By and for the uber wealthy.

I am still predicting that November 4th is gonna be really ugly here in the U.S. With All the Repubs have done, and are currently doing, there is no way in hell that they and Putin will allow a Dem to win. Period. Then their group will be fully empowered like never before to steamroll their agenda thru in short order.

They are dreaming of all the money they will have when they obliterate Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Disability, food stamps, minimum wage, unions, etc etc etc and cut taxes even more on the rich and corporations and raise taxes on the lower 99% of the country..........
