WASHINGTON (AP) The top Senate Republican is denouncing the unfair House impeachment of President Donald Trump and reassuring Trump and his supporters that moments like this are why the United States Senate exists.
Sen. Mitch McConnell, in remarks prepared for a Thursday floor speech, accused House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of being afraid to send their shoddy work product to the Senate after she threw uncertainty into the impeachment process by refusing to say when she would send two impeachment articles to the Senate for a trial.
A trial in the Republican-controlled Senate would almost certainly result in Trump being acquitted of the charges.
McConnell described Trumps impeachment as the most rushed, least thorough, and most unfair impeachment inquiry in modern history.

(55,180 posts)Mitch thinks Mitch has the right to plan Obama's exit from before Obama took office, but Democrats have no right to exercise their Impeachment powers.
Mitch thinks Mitch has the right to choose Supreme Court justices and to hell with custom and norms.
Mitch thinks Mitch can determine all federal judges because of who he is and where he sits.
Democrats have to crack "privilege", and whatever its origins. I have no idea where it comes from. Whiskey and Prohibition? Stokes Monkey Trial? Radical Fundamentalism?

Schumer inviting Trump to pick up the phone and call McConnell was brilliant. You know Trump's gonna do it as sure as the sun comes up in the morning. You just know Trump's going to harrange McConnell about why he can't get "a deal" done. No amount of McConnell explaining is going to change the way Trump feels either.

(8,200 posts)Trump was given an opportunity that very few have been blessed with in their life. The opportunity to provide leadership to better the lives of millions during a period of fundamental economic changes. This is not limited to the leadership that his fellow citizens look to the presidency that to puts the welfare of the citizens as paramount, but for millions who rely on our nation for guidance and inspiration. Rather than following the lead of his partys most inspiring patriot who led the nation in its most perilous times "to bind up the nation's wounds" in the aftermath of the Civil War, Trump has chosen to sow hatred and division as his favorite weapon to desperately hold on to the power he craves.
It is not as if the citizens were not forewarned. Several members of his adopted party loudly proclaimed that he was not a suitable to lead the nation. It was glowingly evident that he had some serious flaws of character long before he captured the nomination of the Republican Party as their choice to seek the highest office in the land. Flaws that would have in more noble times have excluded him from ever being considered of worthy of their endorsement. However, the present upheaval of globalization, mass immigration of desperate people brought on by failed governments and increasing automation provided fertile ground for demagogues. The situation has many similarities to that during the post World War I environment that led to the citizens acceptance of what would in the end result in disastrous consequences for Germany and Italy.
It is plain for all who have eyes to see that Trumps quest for power is insatiable. He has absolute disregard for democracy and its innate demand for transparency and collegial cooperation that put the nation welfare as paramount. Our democratic allies are not cherished, encouraged and supported but have come under scathing attacks is in sharp contrast to his embracement of the most vicious dictators who are accorded the highest regard. This charge is glaringly substantiated in which todays' crop of dictators return the compliment and provide him with the support of their bloody regimes. There is no doubt that if he had been given the opportunity and his admiration for unscrupulous evilness, he would have gladly got in bed with the likes of Hitler, Stalin and Mao.

(204 posts)well put. It is a sad day for our nation. But it is a good day to be a patriot. The courageous Democrats in the House of Representatives stood tall in defending our Constitution, and by extension every one of us, from the predations of the thing in the White House.
