Doug Jones says impeachment must be above electoral politics
Source: Politico
Doug Jones, the most vulnerable Democratic lawmaker up for reelection in the Senate, on Sunday dismissed concerns that a vote to remove President Donald Trump from office would cost him his Senate seat.
Everyone wants to talk about this in the political terms and the political consequences term. This is a much more serious matter than that, the Alabama senator told ABCs This Week co-anchor Martha Raddatz.
This has to do with the future of the presidency and how we want our presidents to conduct themselves. It has all to do with the future of the Senate and how the Senate should handle impeachment and articles of impeachment that come over. Thats how Im looking at this, he added. If I did everything based on a pure political argument all youd need is a computer to mash a button. Thats just not what this country is about. Its not what the founders intended to do.
Jones was asked if he might be one of the Democrats that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he believes will defect from the party in a vote to acquit the president. I have no idea what Mitch McConnells talking about these days, he said.

(12,172 posts)So far I've heard that Roy Moore, Jeff Sessions, and former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville want the seat. Tuberville may not fight dirty, but I imagine that Sessions and Moore will be slinging mud against the others in the primary. Hopefully they'll dirty up the eventual goper nominee enough that Jones will come out ahead in the general again.

(16,238 posts)Jones didn't back away from any of his core beliefs when he ran and won and isn't now.
Here in Pennsylvania, lots of people disagree with Sen Casey's personal opposition to abortion, but he comes by that honestly as part of his belief in the Catholic social teachings, and Pennsylvanians respect that.

(7,449 posts)The republican senate nominee will win by 15+, unless they nominate Moore again or something but that is unlikely.

(12,217 posts)...right him off. I think Jones might have a punchers chance against Sessions.

(27,514 posts)He either votes for impeachment and loses most of his crossover vote... or he votes against it and loses much of his base. And he's already down by several points in a poll released today (before he has to make the decision).
He beats Moore handily... but I don't see how Moore gets the nod.

(571 posts)half of trumpers hate Sessions and the other half hate moore. It will be interesting with Tuberville and Congressman Bradley Byrne in the race. With a 4 way split it's anybody's game but if moore or sessions slip by, Jones has a good chance.

(11,017 posts)I'm an Alabamian and know people associated with the Doug Jones campaign. They are hopeful but when pressed will say it's an uphill battle. The stars aligned for Alabama Dems when Roy Moore was catapulted as the GOP senate nominee against Jones. That was the main reason Doug won. He had a wonderful campaign, of course, and ran as a centrist which helped. But in the end it was the nastiness of his GOP challenger that helped.
I think Doug will be up against Tommy Tuberville this time. Either Tommy or Sessions, but I think Sessions has been so ruined by Trump that even Trump can't bring him back. Tommy Tuberville is an ex Auburn coach who has a following of sorts. If Doug is up against him, Doug loses. Even Alabama fans will vote for Tuberville over Jones. I think Doug also loses to Sessions if Jeff becomes the GOP nominee.
It's bleak. I've encouraged all of my children to get as far away from this state as possible. That saddens me as a life long Alabamian but we can't pretend that Alabama is going to be purple any time in the near or even far future.

Thank you so much for posting this! Just that fact is inspirational.

Sessions had one foot in Hell and the other one in Satan's Outhouse while "serving" Trump.
If the Evangelicals have "a problem" it may get crazy.
Since most White Evangelicals ignore what Christ taught, and support Satan's Army (Republicans) something may break loose there.
The poor, the hungry, the needy? Republicans steal, and lose their children, while storing them in freezing cages.
I wish Democrats would simply point out how E-V-I-L Republicans are on a daily basis.
