BREAKING: Several People Stabbed By Machete-Wielding Suspect During Monsey Chanukah Event

Source: NY Times

A knife attack at the home of a rabbi in a New York suburb on Saturday night left several people with stab wounds, an official said.

The home of the ultra-Orthodox rabbi was in Monsey, N.Y., an area with a large population of ultra-Orthodox Jews.

The stabbing happened during a Hanukkah party, when a man entered the home around 10 p.m., the official said. The attacker fled and was still at large as of 11 p.m.

In what appears to be a hate crime, and one of many that has been happening in New York lately. If it was a right winger, I really doubt we would be having this conversation.

I can DT a POS all day long, along with various other names, and call Nazis garbage etc.... Child molesters-should expire on the spot. Just because a domestic terrorist is black means we suddenly have to be circumspect about our insults? Really? The guy is garbage, with no respect for anyone else. I don't care what color his skin is. Racists, people who perpetrate hate crimes, come in all colors.

4. The Jerusalem Post is reporting a black man in Harlem has been arrested in the case . . .

https://www.jpost.com/Breaking-News/Multiple-victims-reported-after-stabbing-reported-in-synagogue-in-Monsey-NY-612415

A possible suspect has been arrested from a vehicle matching the description of the one used to escape the synagogue where five people were wounded Saturday night New York time in a stabbing attack at what is known as Rabbi Rottenburg’s Shul, located in the Forshay neighborhood in Monsey.

A police official told local media that a possible suspect and a vehicle had been located by the New York Police Department (NYPD) in the 32nd Precinct, which serves the northeastern portion of Harlem.

<snip>

According to (orthodox website) Vos Iz Neias, a black male entered the synagogue and pulled out a machete, then removed its cover and started stabbing people. The Orthodox Jews Public Affairs Council of the area posted on Twitter that five people were stabbed. Other sources were reporting three and four.

11. Here's a clip of the local police chief (from Ramapo, NY) with the report..

The tweet is from a reporter for LoHud, a local paper:

Earlier, there was a report that someone had gotten the attacker's license plate number/vehicle description. The police may have picked up the car when the toll was paid to cross the Hudson into NYC. If vehicle had an automated toll pass, that would have provided a name/address.

10. Yes, absolutely. A discussion that looks

at possible solutions. We can't eliminate hatred, but what can we do to protect people from attacks like this?

Is there any way to intimidate the hate mongers from acting? Do we have to post guards at all religious and social functions these days?

Does an individual carry out attacks like this on his own? Is he part of a hate group?

I am so EFFIN sick of hearing about these kinds of attacks on people.

Telling large audiences of AA Muslims that Israel is to blame for police killing unarmed black men. I've tried to address the subject here before but was met with a lot of push back. 16. LOL! Nope.

The only time anti-Semitism is worthy of discussion in certain circles is a) attackers are white supremacists, b) attackers are other members of the far-right, c) somehow other Jews can be blamed, or d) when it can used as an attack on the POS squatting in the WH. If one of those criterion are not met, then it isn't "worthy". Of course, as of now, no one has died, so definitely not worthy of concern.

Thankfully, as angry as I am, there are a few Jews and others who are willing to stand up and say "NO MORE!" Just not enough of us...yet.

18. I won't recount the conversations I've had, but I will say you're correct.

People can't understand anti Semitic mindsets aren't what they might perceive them to be.

Anti-Semitism is quite literally in every dark corner of every culture. Yet people still pretend it's not in 'our' culture because it's uncomfortable address. It's everyplace! Not in everyone, but no single culture is exempt no matter if it's one you're a member of, or not.

28. Who are you saying "NO MORE!" to?

White supremacists, far-right, and the POS squatting on the WH want minorities to attack each other. They want liberals divided. They've openly called Jewish people anti-semitic for disagreeing with Israel policy. The people protesting outside AIPAC conferences are always Jewish.

The Trump administration generally chooses a "do nothing" approach to domestic terrorism and hate crimes. NY State will likely investigate and prosecute this.

There are more than a few people here who will claim with a straight face that minorities can't be racist, I fully expect this attack to be ignored for the most part once the race of the suspect becomes knows, just like the New Jersey deli attack earlier this month.

32. Minorities can be prejudiced, bigoted, and commit violent hate crimes

I experience way more prejudice/bigotry from minority immigrants and my own people (Indian) than I ever get from white Americans.

but there is a semantic issue where people believe racism means someone has systemic and political power over society, like the people who makes laws and do hiring in jobs. It's one of the irritating arguments that one can only have with liberals.

Conservatives are fine with hating minorities and Jews equally. When Muslim Americans or "Black Hebrew Israelites" or whoever commit hate crimes against Jewish people, RW racists view it more as a solution than a problem. Because they get to use it as an excuse to justify their racism against Muslims and Black Americans. They'll send "thoughts and prayers" for the Jewish victims without doing anything about it.

There are plenty on our side who do though.

And the only time our side seems to care about anti-semitism is when it can be used as part of a selling point. Those of us who are Jewish know there are plenty of anti-Semitic people on both sides.

25. I don't believe that on two levels.

First, political criticism of Israeli policies is not necessarily based on anti Semitism, although it can be.

Second, I don't believe that everyone perceives criticism of Israel as anti Semitic.

But this is about violence. It is insane and has to stop at all points of origin and targets. Cops killing blacks, anti Semites killing Jews, whites targeting Hispanics, Native Americans, AA's, and Islamophobes attacking Muslims.

We are destroying ourselves. I remember peace marches against foreign wars. Do we need peace marches now against internal violence?

But in case it's the former, one can purchase a machete from lowe's for like $20. They also sell many other dangerous weapons for around the same price without any sort of limitations on how can buy them. I currently have several of them in my collection.

55. As a practitioner of HEMA, mine are rhetorical questions. However, incidents such as this should...

initiate a national conversation on the wisdom of permitting easy access to bladed implements of certain configurations. Why should we not require background checks for machetes, swords, etc.? Apparently the suspect has a history of mental illness and hospitalizations. Provided this was reported and assuming he purchased the machete from a retailer, a NICS type system as a requirement for purchase would have stopped the sale, again assuming he purchased it through retailer. He could of fabricated something similar on his own of course, but that would require a higher level of focus and determination presumably.

There is currently a vigorous debate in the UK concerning the configuration of knives available to the general public. For example, studies have shown the sharp points and blades longer than several inches (5 or 6 IIRC) are unnecessary for most domestic culinary use and a good number in the UK are advocating knives with such features be prohibited for general sale. Another study found “kitchen knives were used more frequently than other knives in homicides by users of mental health services and there was an association with unplanned homicide“, and that further “research into into the control of access to kitchen knives to patients with mental disorders was recommended” (https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/14789949.2012.721132)

I see no reason why bladed implements with features that render then more effective as weapons should not require a background check for purchase at the very least. It would be an inconvenience at the point of sale, but I doubt any thoughtful person with a concern for public safety would object.
