Donald Trump tied with Barack Obama as most admired man of the year, poll finds

Source: Newsweek

Donald Trump is considered to be the most-admired man by more Americans this year than in his first two years in office, tying with Barack Obama as the most admired men in the country, with 18 percent of respondents of a new poll naming either the current or former president as top on their list.

The new Gallup poll released Monday shows that admiration for Trump has increased in 2019, despite the findings of special counsel Robert Mueller's report and the president's impeachment in the House of Representatives. In 2017, the president was the second-most admired man, chosen by 14 percent of respondents, while in 2018 the number decreased to 13 percent. Comparatively, Obama has been the most admired man for 12 years in a row.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the survey results showed a clear partisan divide, with most more Democrats saying they admired Obama the most, and the more Republicans supporting Trump. However, Obama had a slightly more non-partisan fan base, with 3 percent of Republicans as well as 12 percent of independents choosing the former president as their favorite. Only 2 percent of Democrats listed Trump as the man they most admired, while just 10 percent of independents did so.

As Gallup noted—according to its polling—the result is in line with Trump's increased overall popularity. The polling agency shows the president finishing out 2019 with a higher approval rating than previous years, at 45 percent. Meanwhile, Obama's continued popularity with Americans appears to be an outlier, with only former President Dwight D. Eisenhower having been considered the most admired man by a double-digit amount of respondents after he left office. In the past two years, 19 percent and 17 percent of respondents cited Obama as the most admired man in the poll.

I have little doubt that the results of this poll are accurate. What it tells me is that slightly less than one out of every five people give Trump the nod, while another slightly less than one out of five picks Obama. A sizeable majority of those polled (64%) picked someone else. That's the way these polls normally turn out, when you have a crowded field; what gets headlines as a "major boost in popularity" for Donnie really comes to a relative handful of respondents shifting to him, probably from some other right-wing character, while another handful likely switched from Obama to some other liberal with greater visibility, such as a current candidate. Don't make of this more than it needs to be, particularly when doing so puts us right into the same "if we don't like the results, call them fake" mindset as our opponent.

Mon Dec 30, 2019, 12:39 PM
Dec 2019

That does not mean that an equal number of people respect them. In fact, as the article suggests, you need to go back to Eisenhower for a former President to be the most respected. The NORM is the President wins almost by default, because he is the obvious answer for his party. As noted Obama has been the most respected for 12 years in a row. It is significant that Trump has yet to have an all out win on this - and hopefully never will as the next poll will hopefully be after he loses the election.

Looking at people who got 2% -

The survey by Gallup is open-ended, and respondents can write in any name they want. As a result, 11 percent wrote down the name of a family member or friend. No other man garnered more than 2 percent in the survey, while other high-profile names getting a nod included former President Jimmy Carter, billionaire businessman Elon Musk, billionaire Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Pope Francis, Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Rep. Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California.

Customers such as Newsweek can specify the target audience as well as critical poll subjects and questions to be asked. It is often misleading to see headlines that Gallup has polled x or y results without seeing the customer who had the poll done. Likewise there are polls and there are polls and there are polls. Which is to say not all polls are equal, nor as transparently accurate as the headlines suggest.

On the other hand there are also polls which are designed to reduce bias in the results which Harris and Gallup, among others, also run.

In our headline based, 6-seconds-of-read-time driven media environment the truth is not only a victim, it is often not even a passenger.

Bullshit data, thrown into a blender to "fluff" it up with spin, grossly out of proportion to its actual influence, then shaped into a turd that benefits the turd. Newsweek/Gallup has it down to an art.

We know that the 2018 election was not an anomaly. I don't believe the turd has recruited a single net vote since that election. He has LOST net votes.

IF the votes are counted fairly, the blue tsunami will become real, giving us control of all three branches of the government. Then we can concentrate on erasing the legacy of the turd from our political history. Just like he is TRYING to do to Obama. (All because of that damn series of jokes "roasting" the turd at the White House Correspondents' Dinner.)

We DO need to concentrate on the senate and make SURE that Moscow Mitch and Leningrad Lindsey, and the rest of the turd's enablers, are buried in the dust bin of history, preferably in jail. I am not concerned with the fine distinctions of the definition of treason. In trying legal cases, some "technicalities" are legit, but others are what allows murderers to get off scot-free. If someone has aided and abetted a foreign government for the purpose of negating the result of a popular election, they are guilty of treason. At this point I don't give a flying fuck whether they were just willful idiots, or active participants.

The question is, how do we make sure the votes are counted fairly if nothing is being done about it? All ballots should have paper backups that CAN'T be changed, or "disappeared", and that isn't happening. A few states are trying, but ALL states should be making plans to provide these backups. All of our cyber capabilities should be focused on preventing outside manipulation, and THAT SURE isn't happening.

I still say EVERYONE should photograph their finished ballot/screen/printout, including an acceptable id/voter registration in the photo, just in case we need to PROVE our vote. Voters are allowed to have assistance in the voting booth, so have someone there to help you, if necessary. I have done so for the last three elections.

Then the democratic party needs to be willing to do the work to make sure the voter precincts reflect the tally matching the photos. Difficult, but doable. All we have to do is verify the Democratic votes. Inconvenient? Yes. Time consuming? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely. It is only the survival of our nation that is at stake.

Lock him up.
