White House says U.S. has asked North Korea to resume talks

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - White House national security adviser Robert OBrien said the United States had reached out to North Korea seeking to resume talks, according to an interview published on Sunday by Axios.
OBrien also said it was a positive sign that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had not delivered on a warning of a Christmas gift. Some analysts had said that might be a sign Pyongyang was preparing a long-range missile test, while U.S. President Donald Trump said last month the gift might be a beautiful vase.
Weve reached out to the North Koreans and let them know that we would like to continue the negotiations in Stockholm that were last undertaken in early October, OBrien told the online news site on Friday. Weve been letting them know, through various channels, that we would like to get those back on track.
A spokesman for the National Security Council did not immediately comment on Sunday.

(14,770 posts)* tRump and his "negotiators" will make a big show of meetings and numerous announcements of progress toward a "deal", probably through the spring, perhaps even with another tRump/Kim summit and hug-fest.
* Behind the scenes, tRump will give in on sanctions and loosen the screws enough that Kim agrees to a another paper agreement to reduce missile and nuclear activity.
* Sometimes afterward, tRump will make an announcement of an earth-shattering agreement that will be the biggest deal ever. SK, Russia and perhaps even China will be conned into singing praise unto him.
* Roughly next fall, a huge show will be made of the whole affair......perfectly timed prior to the election.

"Trump's policy toward Iran likely underscores Pyongyang's belief that nuclear weapons are necessary for the security of the regime," Davenport said. Moreover, the president's decision to tear up the Iran nuclear deal sends the message to Kim Jong Un that he "needs to demand tangible concessions upfront because the United States cannot be trusted to follow through," she added.
The U.S. targeted killing of an Iranian official could complicate future negotiations with North Korea even further, Davenport warned. "It may cause Kim Jong Un to think twice about sending high-level diplomats or officials in his nuclear weapons program out of the country."

This is a similar approach taken by Trump when Xi was having a meal with him in the US. At virtually the same time, US cruise missiles were fired into Syria. It's the mafia don approach from the NYC days.
The notion that North Korean missiles aren't accurate is probably little more than wishful thinking. Intelligence analysts in South Korea expressed concern that the shorter ranged tactical ballistic missiles fired this year by North Korea are probably similar in nature to the missiles fired just recently by Iran which appear to be very accurate. Also of concern was the observation that the Iranian missiles were not intercepted. The short range North Korean ballistic missiles which have a modified flattened trajectory and a variable terminal course makes detecting and tracking those missiles more difficult.
