(9,263 posts)We hear no such comments on such matters like sport teams, no demand for diversity for NBA teams. The best is the best is color blind in my opinion

(29,929 posts)Have problems hiring minority coaches the NBA does a good job even with women in coaching and front office roles. Plus David Stern was behind the WNBA leveling the playing field before it was popular.
Also in sports there is statistical discrimination depending on the position.
Throughout history though when it comes to films there have been more white cast, director, screenwriter, etc while you have snubs. Hollywood is also known for perpetuating stereotypes so they are far from the best industry.
Stephen King's follow up Tweets shows that he gets it that the industry needs to do better.

(5,240 posts)being suppressed by systemic bigotry then I agree with King. I am hoping that will someday be true.

(28,473 posts)For example take the character of Nick Fury who is white in the marvel comic universe who has been played both by David Hasselhoff and Samuel L. Jackson.
Hasselhoffs version in Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. reeked and he failed completely at the role (in fact I would be happy if we could burn every copy of that movie just to protect future generations from the horror) yet Jackson completely nailed the character 100% entirely later on when he cast in the role for the MCU due to his acting ability.

(6,127 posts)The main focus of the multiple versions of Spiderman is Miles Morales, a black teen. It may have been an animated version but it was outstanding and didn't detract from the traditional white Peter Parker Spiderman.

Shaft as a white dude
Bond as a woman
Captain America as a Englishman
Sorry, stuck in my prejudices and apologize for that, but am too old to give a damn.

(29,710 posts)Awards should be based on true merit, not a quota.
I went to see, "Dr. Sleep" (Stephen King book made into a movie) a few months back. The young blonde girl in the book, was played by a young black girl in the movie. She did a great job. I'm sure Stephen was pleased.

(13,854 posts)I'm quite certain that a younger black woman, for example, will judge 'quality' differently than an older white male such as Stephen King. What's not addressed in this discussion is whether or not there's enough diversity in the people that make award nominations and who make the final decisions.

(16,296 posts)Some "art" praised for what race, ethnicity, or sex orientation the creator was is wrong. Quality counts.

I don't know why we are pretending Hollywood doesn't have problems. There is a reason why he walked it back because he understands.

Hollywood is known for The Last Samurai starring Tom Cruise.

(20,005 posts)artists out there who are perfectly capable of being the best based just on their talents. They don't need anyone's help . Their art and their talent stands for itself.
It's kind of insulting for someone to insinuate otherwise.

(204 posts)right, you know. The work should be judged on the quality of the work, not on the color of the skin of the person who produced it.
