Netanyahu withdraws bid for parliamentary immunity from prosecution on corruption charges

Source: Reuters

JANUARY 28, 2020 / 4:49 AM

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday he is withdrawing his bid for parliamentary immunity from prosecution on corruption charges.

Israel’s longest-serving prime minister said in a statement the immunity proceedings in parliament would have been a “circus” and he did not want to take part in this “dirty game”.

The case now moves toward trial, a process which could take months or years. The right-winger, who faces a national election in March, is under no legal obligation to resign.

Israel’s attorney general Avichai Mandelblit indicted Netanyahu on corruption charges - the first of their kind against a serving Israeli prime minister - last November following a long-running investigation. The charges included bribery, breach of trust and fraud.

Both appear to be as corrupt as they come, but Netanyahu is infinitely more intelligent. While they both went to schools in the US, Netanyahu was actually "educated" here.

Israel's attorney general has filed a formal indictment in court against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
...
Hours after the announcement, Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit filed a 78-page indictment to the Jerusalem District Court.

The BBC's Tom Bateman in Jerusalem says the submission marks the official start of Mr Netanyahu's prosecution.

It is the first time a serving Israeli prime minister has been formally charged with criminal offences, he adds.

So today's "best Israel/Palestine plan ever" is designed to please 2 heads of government facing charges of corruption. What could possibly go wrong?
