China's Hubei province reports 45 new coronavirus deaths on Feb 1, total at 294

BEIJING, Feb 2 (Reuters) - The number of deaths in China's central Hubei province from the new coronavirus outbreak had risen by 45 to 294 as of the end of Feb. 1, Chinese state television reported on Sunday.

There had been a further 1,921 cases detected in Hubei, the epicentre of the outbreak, taking the total in the province to 9,074.

Hubei's provincial capital of Wuhan, where the virus is thought to have originated, reported 894 new confirmed cases on Feb. 1 and 32 new deaths. A total of 224 people in Wuhan have now died from the virus, for which there is no vaccine.

New confirmed cases also surged by 276 in nearby Huanggang on Feb. 1. One death was reported in the city, about 60 km (37 miles) east of Wuhan.

6. It's not exactly spreading like wildfire

although travelers have spread it to every province. Had they not shut down mass transit when they did, it would likely be much, much worse, being crammed together in Wuhan's rush hour seems to have been one of the more efficient ways to spread the virus.

It is likely to get worse before it gets better, but I have to admire the quick action taken there once public health officials realized what was happening when the cluster of health care workers came down with it.

I doubt anyone would have had the courage to do the same had the virus emerged here.

In a separate post Friday, Li recounted how, on Dec. 30, he had examined the medical report of a patient whose condition seemed strikingly similar to SARS, also caused by a coronavirus. Li decided to share this discovery with his former medical school classmates so that they might take appropriate precautions. In their class WeChat group, he sent a message that read: “Seven cases of SARS confirmed.”

“After I sent the message, the police found me and made me sign an official letter of criticism,” Li said. According to a photo of the letter included in Li’s post, the police chastised him on Jan. 3 for “making untrue comments” that had “severely disturbed the social order.”...

12. Official denial is always the first reaction anywhere you go

Once they had the cluster of cases in health care workers, they knew denial wasn't going to be possible and they started to listen to public health workers.

I remember the initial backlash against doctors who started to see immune system collapse in young men in the 80s.

Nope, not yet. Those 2000 cases a day are probably a result of better reporting by people who know why their city has been shut down and reflect the mild cases as well as the potentially deadly ones.

Thai doctors have seen success in treating severe cases of the new coronavirus with combination of medications for flu and HIV, with initial results showing vast improvement 48 hours after applying the treatment, they said on Sunday...

"This is not the cure, but the patientâ(TM)s condition has vastly improved. From testing positive for 10 days under our care, after applying this combination of medicine the test result became negative within 48 hours," Dr. Kriangska Atipornwanich, a lung specialist at Rajavithi, told reporters.
