The results are in: On Groundhog Day 2020, Punxsutawney Phil could not find his shadow. And as the legend goes, this means we're in for an early spring.
...................................
This is only the 20th time out of 123 in his recorded history (there are 10 years where no record remains) that Phil hasn't been able to find his shadow.
Even so, Phil is usually wrong, and meteorologists aren't too sure Phil's suspicions are right either.
.................................
They reported that Phil communicated in "groundhogese" that he could not find his shadow. According to legend, that means there will be an early spring.
The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club traces the tradition's roots back to Candlemas Day in Europe - the Christian "festival of lights" that falls on Feb. 2, midway between the start and end of winter...........................................

(86,944 posts)we usually have high winds when nobody else does. Yesterday I went out to the river and there was spray whipping up from the rapids!

(19,205 posts)Two of my friends, and myself, went to the "festivities" in Punxsutawney on Ground Hogs Day. Even way back then it was an "event". One of the friends grew up there and his parents still lived there, so we had free lodging. It just turned into another drunken slobberknocker, but we had a great time and the people of Punxsutawney were fantastic. I'll never forget our road trip to "Gobbler's Knob". It was a hoot!

(7,512 posts)Groundhog Day used to mean something in this town. They used to pull the hog out and they used to eat it. You're hypocrites, all of you!

(17,122 posts)The Celts saw it as the beginning of Spring. The Church took it over as Candlemas.
This tradition spans millennia

(17,122 posts)I don't mind the safe driving on dry roads, but so far, we haven't seen winter weather here.

(24,398 posts)Which means that the groundhog would be 65% accurate if the terms were reversed, ie: if not seeing his shadow meant a longer winter, rather than an early spring.

I wouldn't worry too much about Phil, he's Punxy's meal ticket. They take good care of him and he's not roadkill like many of his groundhog brethren.
