MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) Uncomfortable and under duress for much of the game, Patrick Mahomes suddenly recaptured his mojo and lifted Andy Reid and the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory, the teams first NFL championship in a half-century.
All it took was falling behind by double digits in the postseason again. Then Mahomes, selected MVP, hit two long passes on touchdown drives for a 31-20 victory Sunday over the San Francisco 49ers.
We never lost faith, Mahomes said. Thats the biggest thing. Everybody on this team, no one had their head down. We believed in each other. Thats what we preached all year long.
The vaunted 49ers defense wilted late, particularly on passes of 44 yards to Tyreek Hill and 38 to Sammy Watkins. The touchdowns came on short throws to Travis Kelce to cut the deficit to three and to Damien Williams for the lead. The first NFL title in Chiefs coach Reids two-decade career was clinched by Williams 38-yard TD run, sending red-clad Chiefs fan into chants of Andy! Andy!

Although I sincerely hope it doesn't take that long.

(25,848 posts)My sister who lives in Overland Park tells me that at the very end of the game she could hear cheering in her suburban neighborhood, and when she went outside, she could see all kinds of fireworks going off.

(25,848 posts)And the part of Kansas that is next to Kansas City Missouri hugely supports the Kansas City Chiefs.
So yes, there were fireworks in Kansas.

(23,213 posts)I'm in eastern Jackson County MO, 25 miles from downtown KC. Jackson County sounded like a war zone with fireworks!

(65,173 posts)I never did like Reid much but I respected what he did for the team. I think if we hadnt won our own Super Bowl a couple years ago, I would be feeling down about this. It is easier to feel good for Reid now.

(7,605 posts)The refs are stuck with limited video information. They have to uphold the call on the field unless there is conclusive video evidence to overturn the original call.

(9,137 posts)Until they install sensors on the field, and in the ball, we still have to rely on the judgement of officials.
(I do find it amazingly inept though, that FOX didn't have a definitive angle of the goal line. They use around 100 cameras to cover the game, and they DON'T always have a dedicated goal line shot available? https://www.forbes.com/sites/kevinmurnane/2020/02/02/foxs-4k-super-bowl-broadcast-isnt-really-4k/)

(312 posts)The official was in a terrible position to be able to see, exactly on the wrong side of everything.
Lamest touchdown I've ever seen.

(9,137 posts)Whaaa....? Were we watching the same play?

(312 posts)Using the wonderful picture you have shown me, and considering that "A player is considered to be out of bounds when any part of his body makes contact with the white line. Play stops when that occurs." would you not say it is way clearer in this picture that he is out of bounds than that that football has crossed the white of the goal line in any way?
LudwigPastorius
(9,137 posts)While his left foot does appear to be out of bounds at the moment of this picture (hard to say about his right foot. depends on if it is contacting the ground), the ball also appears to be about halfway through the plane extending up from the front of the white goal line.
This indicates, to me at least, that the ball broke that plane earlier than the picture was snapped, which also means that it could have broken the plane earlier than the point his foot went out of bounds...which is what the field judge, who was standing right there, determined.

(29,322 posts)All that ball's nose has to do is reach the white line and it is a touchdown. He reached over the white line.

(3,165 posts)That was one choke job by San Francisco...Not as colossal as the Falcons blowing the 28-3 lead, but this one is rather epic....Blowing 10 point lead in 4th quarter, & the WTF clock management moment at end of first half...
Better to lose 51-0 than blow it like this game....
mvd
(65,173 posts)KC was weak against the run. I also think the way they played, the 49ers defense was tired at the end.
Hawaii Hiker
(3,165 posts)It was a complete collapse in the 4th quarter, quick 3 and out drives, giving up a big pass play on the 3rd and 15, the horrible time management at end of 1st half...
Aside from Atlanta blowing the 28-3 lead against NE couple years ago, this is probably 2nd biggest collapse in Super Bowl history

(7,605 posts)I expected KC to win after that.
I think. The 49ers put it all out there the first three quarters and by the 4th they were tired. Im a Chiefs fan, but those first 3 quarters were hard to watch. I almost went to bed by the 4th quarter, but thought theyve been down before-dont give up on them now. So happy I didnt!!!❤️💛❤️💛

Third crazy comeback in the last three games, what a gritty performance to win tonight!

(13,036 posts)What were the chances of the Chiefs winning on the 50th anniversary of their last win? Shocking that the Chiefs were able to pull a 4th quarter miracle like that. First 3 quarters were lethargic, and all of a sudden last 10 minutes wam bam.
I didn't watch the game but did catch the half time on youtube. Liked it.
LudwigPastorius
(9,137 posts)According to the Las Vegas bookmakers, the final odds before kickoff that the Chiefs would win were 47.5%.
...so, a pretty darn good chance.
