Ten people aboard a cruise ship anchored off the coast of Yokohama, Japan, tested positive for the new coronavirus, Japanese media reported Tuesday. The news comes as the number of reported infections outside China continues to grow.

The roughly 3,500 passengers and crew aboard the British-flagged ship, the Diamond Princess, have been quarantined for more than a day after a traveler from Hong Kong was diagnosed with the new coronavirus.

All the infected passengers were in their 50s or older, with some in their 80s, Japan's health and labor minister said, according to the news agency Jiji. Three were said to be Japanese nationals.

More than 270 people are being tested, said Katsunobu Kato, Japan's minister of health, labor and welfare, the Nikkei Asian Review reported.

More than 5,300 people are being quarantined on two cruise ships off Hong Kong and Japan amid concerns passengers and crew were inadvertently exposed to the Wuhan coronavirus by infected passengers.

People aboard both ships are being given health screenings, and those with suspicious symptoms are being tested for the virus that has quickly spread throughout mainland China and beyond.

The Diamond Princess is anchored off the coast of Yokohama, near Tokyo, with 1,045 crew and 2,666 passengers -- including 428 Americans -- on board.

The second ship, the World Dream, is docked at Hong Kong's Kai Tak Cruise Terminal with 1,800 people on board, the city's Department of Health said Wednesday.

Yesterday, I got a brochure from a cruise ship company. I'm not interested, but one of the cruises they were selling was a cruise up the Yangtze River, with a stop at Wuhan. I'm guessing that cruise will be canceled.
