Coronavirus Live Updates: Wuhan to Round Up the Infected for Mass Quarantine Camps
Source: New York Times
A senior Chinese official has ordered the authorities in the city of Wuhan to immediately round up all residents who have been infected with the coronavirus and place them in isolation, quarantine or designated hospitals.
Sun Chunlan, a vice premier tasked with leading the central governments response to the outbreak that is centered in Wuhan, said city investigators should go to each home to check the temperatures of every resident and interview infected patients close contacts.
Set up a 24-hour duty system. During these wartime conditions, there must be no deserters, or they will be nailed to the pillar of historical shame forever, Ms. Sun said.
The citys authorities have raced to meet these instructions by setting up makeshift mass quarantine shelters this week. The shelters are meant for coronavirus patients with milder symptoms, the government has said. But concerns are growing about whether the centers, which will house thousands of people in large spaces, will be able to provide even basic care to patients and protect against the risk of further infection.

Another troublesome update coming out of China. Their criticism of the US's Chinese traveler restrictions looks quite hypocritical to me.

(29,098 posts)They are being set up to house those coming from the areas in China mostly infected, though I'm not really sure how the heck they will truly be able to accurately assess that. The article states that it will be used for those who are unable to quarantine themselves.

(29,098 posts)There are designated airports to receive travelers from this area. Seattle is one of them. I believe the other centers are being set up close to those cities as well.

(29,098 posts)I would be less concerned overall if Trump minions weren't running the show. Their propensity towards racial profiling and locking folks up has not been stellar...to say the least. There's going to need to be a great deal of ass covering for their CDC cuts which will surely be over reaction out of an "abundance of caution" excuse.
I wasn't alarmed at all at first but my spidey sense is telling me that this could possibly go down hill real quickly.

(16,377 posts)Pandemic hits. With an estimated fifty-thousand new cases a day in China, this could certainly turn out to be the big one. I have to believe this virus is much more contagious than previously reported. Yikes.

(29,098 posts)If you pay attention to some of the stuff coming out on tic toc it sounds extremely crazy...so I would take a lot of this with a great deal of salt. Clearly it's highly contagious but not necessarily a death sentence. It does have a higher death rate than the major flu epidemics in history but pneumonia can be quite serious especially in the elderly or immune compromised.
Practicing proper precautions is your best defense. Wash you hands. Try not to touch your mouth, nose, eyes and ears unless you wash your hands first. And if you are feeling sick, stay home, call your health care provider and take proper care of yourself.
My husband is flying next week and I did manage to snare a mask for him. He probably won't wear it...But it's there if he needs it.

(20,576 posts)had photos of the new "hospitals" China built in just days. There were rows and rows of beds filling thousands of square feet. There were no side table or nurses' stations, just rows and rows of beds, some were cots. These buildings are not real hospitals but as this article says, quarantine centers. I guess this is what an epidemic really looks like. It was taken down when I went back to send it to someone.

(26,283 posts)becoming one and to be honest I can understand the urgency they are feeling because they have 1.3 billion people in China and any major outbreaks be it this or even a really bad strain of the flu can potentially cause far more deaths due to the population density.

My aunt was born 2 weeks after her father died. Tough times, woman didnt work outside the house in those days. This took place in a small town in Northern California. 4 people in that town died that day. People were dropping like flies.

(1,660 posts)From Jan 21 to today, the infection data in Excel fits a second-order polynomial curve with an R-squared of 0.9996 - i.e. with 99.96% accuracy. The equation I got is (y = 132.41x^2 - 430.8x + 867.28). The first term - 132.41x^2 - determines the shape of the curve.
The projection of the curve into the near future has been showing the same thing for 5 days: if the spread stays on this curve there will be ~80,000 infections by Feb. 15, 9 days from now.
It's no wonder the Chinese authorities are getting stern about this. I hope their draconian intervention interrupts the curve.

(7,153 posts)A couple of days ago, I was calculating roughly 80,000 cases by 15 Feb myself.
The last couple of days, the reported number of new cases was diminishing day after day.
BUT this could be reporting designed to mask the true state of affairs.

(1,660 posts)This has been a difficult lesson in transparency for the Chinese, and they may be fencing in the reporting now they they see how bad it is.

That with the three cruise ships circling Japan reminds me of the pox ships anchored in the harbors of our country in the 1700s.
The shot might help me not get the pneumonia that people develop from this virus.
My grandmother lived in Pottsville, PA and told me stories of how there were not enough gravediggers or coffins so the dead were piled up in mass graves. Horrible things happened in 1918!
I dread to think how King Orange would manage such a pandemic.
