Sen. Collins says retribution after impeachment acquittal would not be appropriate

Maine's Republican senator defended her vote not to impeach Trump, as news outlets reported Friday afternoon that Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, who testified against him, was dismissed from his post.
U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, appearing in Maine for the first time since her vote not to impeach President Trump, said Friday that she disapproves of retribution against anyone who came forward with evidence during the process.
Even as she was saying that, the Washington Post reported that Trump was expected to fire Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a National Security Council aide who testified against him during the House impeachment inquiry. The president also has hinted, as have some supporters, that there should be payback against some of his critics.
Collins said she was obviously against that, but she did defend her vote to acquit the president, while also acknowledging his conduct was wrong.
I think its important to understand that when youre in an impeachment trial, you consider the evidence that is before you, the Republican senator said following an event in South Portland. You dont try to make predictions. You consider the evidence thats before you. In this case, the evidence did not meet the high bar thats established by the constitution for immediate removal of the president from office. So that was the basis for my decision...........................................

(7,430 posts)Trump is soothing Susan's quaint sensibilities. "Yes, dear, and did I ever tell you that you remind me of my mother? She was such a sweet darling."
Susan believes that Donnie is such a wonderful boy. "He'll never do anything intentionally wrong, you can have my word on that. But all these people are saying is that Donnie is doing bad things, and that hurts Donnie's feelings. He can't be helped if he goes overboard just a little bit, after all that's been said."... "Well, if he murdered somebody, I'd have to look long and hard at the evidence. But you know, I just wouldn't believe it. Donnie wouldn't hurt anybody."

(156 posts)But I was hoping for at least a few GOP senators to vote guilty but no such luck. They are all just a bunch of cowards with no backbone. I dont agree with Romney on anything, but I do think he is a moral man. If John McCain were alive, I believe he would have voted for removal. Sadly, we are all going to suffer for the next 9 months.

(3,524 posts)At least those senators who went with we dont need more witnesses, weve seen enough, we know what the pResident did, we just dont think it merits impeachment... have got a narrative they can defend, even if completely wrong. But to say the evidence wasnt convincing while simultaneously voting to deny more witnesses and documents to be brought in is just a whole other level of duplicitous.
