Trump requests sharp funding boost for NASA's Artemis moon program

Source: CBS News

The Trump administration is requesting $25.2 billion for NASA in fiscal 2021, a 12% increase that includes $3.3 billion to kickstart development of a human-rated lander for the Artemis moon program. Nearly half of the budget request, $12.3 billion, is devoted to new and ongoing projects focused on the return to the moon and eventual flights to Mars.

"This is a 21st century budget worthy of 21st century space exploration and one of the strongest budgets in NASA history," said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. "If the president's support for NASA wasn't clear before, it should be obvious now."

NASA documents indicate it will cost about $35 billion to fund the Artemis moon program, as currently envisioned, through the first landing of a man and woman on the lunar surface in 2024. To make that happen, the budget request says NASA will need $25.2 billion in 2021, $27.2 billion in fiscal 2022, $28.6 billion in 2023, $28.1 billion in 2024 and $26.3 billion in 2025.

Whether a generally supportive Congress will go along with that level of spending in an era of bipartisan conflict and the administration's call for major cuts in a variety of other programs, primarily social programs, remains to be seen.

2. $35 billion to go to the moon--for what purpose?

Been there, done that a lot of years ago. That $35 billion could be used to upgrade our aging infrastructure, or for medical research, or for better education, or for job training, or to incentivize green energy research and manufacturing, or for better cyber security, or for any number ofnother more pressing needs. Trump is a doofus.

Although, if Trump would be on a rocket to be left on the moon forever, I would change my mind and be in favor. Could they launch tomorrow?

5. There's a LOT we still don't know about the Moon, and it's the closest proving ground

short of Mars itself. If we can't master living on the moon, everyone who goes to Mars, dies.

If we're REALLY going to go with this overpriced SLS piece of crap, might as well go all in.

12. We must not equate unrelated things

We are losing medicaid because of republicans not not because we are investing in science and space. Vote and we can have health care AND a viable space program.

People are in the poor house because our current hyper-capitalist neoliberal economic model is designed to help the wealthy not the average citizen. Vote and we can expel the idiots in charge and start on a road to recover our future, our homes and our livelihoods

Also on a side note - the reason we should go back to the moon is based on basic physics not economics or false moral equivalencies

He knows his policies are going to fuck over humanity, but he doesn't care. He's planning to use our tax money to move to the moon when the Earth becomes uninhabitable. Easy peasy! Just pop a tent and an oxygen canister, and you're good! It's the greatest plan! He drew this picture of his vision (with his trusted Sharpie) and has given it to NASA as inspiration to get going.

I predict now that Trump will want his name permanently placed on the Moon.
