Death toll from coronavirus exceeds 1,000

The death toll from the new coronavirus surpassed 1,000 on Monday as governments around the world work to contain the outbreak.
Officials announced Monday that 1,016 people in mainland China have died from the coronavirus and that 42,638 people had contracted the infection, The New York Times reported. The statistics indicate a rapid surge in the number of confirmed cases and deaths stemming from it.
China's National Health Commission reported on Sunday 40,171 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 908 deaths. The Hubei province, the epicenter of the virus, announced 103 deaths in the past day from the deadly disease, accounting for a majority of the newly reported deaths.
The coronavirus first appeared in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in December among people who were exposed to wildlife at a seafood market. In the intervening weeks, it has spread to thousands of people in more than a dozen countries, including the United States. Hong Kong and the Philippines have each reported one death stemming from the virus.

(839 posts)the numbers coming out has been at 2.1% everyday, so unless the virus knows math, the number is suspect.
even in wuhan the scientists are detecting very high level of SO2, (=to the about 14,000 burning bodies)

(25,853 posts)earlier today (can't recall precisely which program it was) and they said that outside of China people are being diagnosed with the virus at much lower viral loads, and with few or no symptoms. I hope I've expressed that clearly.
It is obvious that what's being reported in China are people who are getting very sick. Lots of those who are exposed don't get very sick at all.

(43,146 posts)don't know, but perhaps because they are being diagnosed earlier since everyone is on the lookout for cases now?

(25,853 posts)unless they are VERY sick.
In this country, despite the many flaws in our health care system, a lot of people go to a doctor pretty quickly when they aren't well. That may likewise be true of other first world countries.
In fact, during flu season, one huge problem in emergency rooms is that someone who thinks they have the flu show up, along with six other family members and wait, sometimes for hours depending on what else is going on in that ER at the time.

(22,669 posts)To the tune of 220,000 net people added to the planet per day. So in a way, Earth has a virus alright, but coronavirus isn't even listed on that same chart.
Whose side are you on? 8-)
On a side note, Chinese businesses across the globe report trade to their shops has dropped way off.
It's as though being Chinese automatically means you are infectious. Or maybe it's just an excuse for expressions of racism?
Like: Always knew them Chinese were up to no good! No Chinese takeaway for us tonight!
