Oilman, former Texas governor candidate Williams dies at 88

By JAMIE STENGLE

DALLAS (AP) — Clayton Williams, a colorful Texas oilman and philanthropist whose 1990 run for governor was derailed after joking about rape and acknowledging he went a year without paying income taxes, has died. He was 88.

Williams died Friday at his home in Midland after struggling with pneumonia, his nephew, Clay Pollard, said Saturday. Pollard said Williams spent some time in the hospital after coming down with pneumonia and though he was able to go home, he never really recovered. Pollard said Williams was surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren when he died.

“He had just a huge personality,” Pollard said.

Williams, who graduated from Texas A&M University in 1954, provided millions to the school, including providing the lead gift in 1985 toward the construction of the school’s alumni center, which is named for him, the university’s alumni association said on it’s website.

but he was still bitter that he couldn't just walk up and grab a woman. His famous line? If you're being raped-lie back and enjoy it. Oh, those were the days when public shame worked. Now they have no shame and can't be stopped. But, I hope we fight back like hell and scratch their eyes out while screaming RAPE!!!

I did not know who he was, other than a brash Texan. He was quite jovial and happy when I saw him, and a rather funny speaker. Perhaps if I had known who he was, he wouldn’t have been funny.

As for his death, my son says he died peacefully, attended by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
