Democrats Plan to Highlight Health Care and Jobs Over Investigating Trump

WASHINGTON — House Democrats, recovering from their failed push to remove President Donald Trump from office, are making a sharp pivot to talking about health care and economic issues, turning away from their investigations of the president as they focus on preserving their majority.

Top Democrats said that oversight of the president will continue, and they plan in particular to press Attorney General William Barr over what they said are Trump’s efforts to compromise the independence of the Justice Department. But for now, at least, they have shelved the idea of subpoenaing Trump’s former national security adviser, who was a central figure in the president’s impeachment trial.

In a series of private meetings over the past week and in written instructions she distributed to lawmakers Thursday before a recess this week, Speaker Nancy Pelosi made clear that the emphasis must shift.

“Health care, health care, health care,” the speaker said, describing the party’s message during a recent closed-door meeting, according to a person in the room who insisted on anonymity to reveal private conversations. She said they had to be laser-focused on getting reelected: “When you make a decision to win, then you have to make every decision in favor of winning.”

.................................. Democrats appear to have decided that focusing on Trump’s near-daily stream of norm-shattering words and deeds only elevates him, while alienating the swing voters they need to maintain their hold on the House and have a chance at winning the Senate.................................

I think it is a good move. we have to work to take the Senate---along with the Presidency. (and of course keep the House)

Really? I'll remember that the next time I lock up kids or mock the disabled or lie to my neighbors or cheat on my wife with a porn star: I'm not being a selfish, self-serving asshole; I'm just "shattering norms."

You sent us to keep an eye on this guy.

We've told you what he's up to and how harmful and selfish his behavior is.

His friends in the Senate have refused to take corrective action.

Now it is time to replace him AND them!

a spat between two parties that does not benefit them personally. They hear the noise next door and blame both partners, gaining some sympathy for the one taken to court.

As in the midterms, we need to tell them what we offer to better their healthcare, financial security, educational opportunities that won’t substantially raise their taxes.

And we need to concentrate on equality in all phases of life, from job prospects to education to the justice system. We need to ensure the freedom to walk American streets without being terrified, harassed, criminalized, and murdered.

America wants to see this Trump business in the rear view.

Some optimism would help too. About the American people. Joe gets that right.

However, we did the right thing. History will bear us out. Once we get in, that historical reckoning will be near at hand. We said our piece. Let’s get on to winning this thing now.

shithole is impeach for the rest of his sick life. And it will fester in his tiny little brain forever. Majority of Americans know he is a crook, con, and basic criminal. He cheats and steals, not trustworthy. He is an habitual liar and he doesn't care.

And those who believe Democrats are not further investigating him including asshole Barr don't know Nancy P.

Democrats can eat, chew gum and walk and talk at the same time, we are multitask.

What if (when) he commits even MORE serious crimes?

Declares Martial Law? Invalidates the election? Dissolves the House?

We're going to sit back and talk about health care and jobs?????

Sheesh.....I've been a Democrat my whole life but sometimes I can't take the spinelessness of my party. A butter knife to a gunfight.

These are not "normal" times and politics as usual! Due the incessant attacks on the rule of law and separation of powers, the fate of our democracy literally hangs in the balance. Not taking every opportunity possible to expose and publicize the lawless and criminality of this administration and its enablers is naive and derelict.

The turd and his sycophants are desperate for us to concentrate on health care, jobs, every day issues. Their base doesn't really give a squat about those issues, they worship the cult leader. They don't even believe his shit. They just hate us libtards so much, spitting in OUR face is all they care about.

The LAST things they want us kvetching over are the turd's criminal acts, his obstruction, his money laundering, his fraudulent charities, his stuffing his pockets full of tax payer monies, his treason.

We can talk about every day issues AND talk about his treasonous crimes, simultaneously, but if we let the criminal charges slide, it will be at our own peril. No accountability = repeats of criminal behavior. We are seeing more examples of the repeat behavior every day.

The democrats are notorious for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Our spinelessness is the primary cause of this. Americans are seeing this fiasco unfold before them, and are DESPERATE for the democrats to show guts and passion.

Yes, we worry about jobs and health care. But quite frankly, our jobs and health care are small issues if the country's foundations collapse due to the turd's ever widening administrative implosion into a fascist state. AFTER we deal with the turd, we can deal with the jobs and health care issues. Without the first, the second will be irrelevant.

The democrats need to learn how to shape and control the narrative, rather than sit back and let the republicans define us, and the issues. We can not stress the DANGERS we are facing, enough. We MUST be able to demonstrate to the American public what is at stake. And we will NOT be able to convince our fellow Americans of the gravity of this situation WITHOUT blunt, in your face honesty, and a passion reflecting the principles this nation was founded on.

This is our last chance. If we don't get it right this time, nothing will be left.

We have to get out the vote in numbers that can NOT be denied. Then, if required, we must make sure he leaves the people's house.

The issue is Trump - not health-care or jobs. If we don't beat this fascist asshole in this election, who controls the senate is completely irrelevant.

Here at DU, we are for the most part political junkies and passionately follow current events. But we are not the majority of Americans in that regard.

Next time you go out, look around at everyone else going about their daily lives trying to make ends meet and dealing with work-a-day life. Chat up the check out clerks or the people waiting in line around you. What is going on in Washington is far from their minds.

Emphasing policies that will help them lead better and less stressful lives is just good politics.

Why do Repubs win? Because they attack. That is what needs to be done now, for effin good reason. Don is a traitor a criminal and his crimes and deeds need to be broadcast loudly and steadily. Like "Does a Christian, cheat on his wife, steal from his friends, put children in jail, seek sex with minors? IF you see that this is wrong then do not vote for that person - Don Trump."

Hammer him with his crimes. Coordinate attacks like the GOP. Get loud and dramatic. This is not e Dem vs Repub election. This is an election to restore American democracy.
