Posted at 06:50 PM ET, 01/12/2012 Gray wants Occupy protesters removed from McPherson Square By Mike DeBonis McPherson Square protesters have hunkered down for the cold weather. (Bill O'Leary - WASHINGTON POST) UPDATED 8:35 P.M. Mayor Vincent C. Gray called on the National Park Service today to remove protesters from McPherson Square to “allow for elimination of the rat infestation, clean up, and restoration” of the downtown park. In a letter to Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis, Gray suggests moving the McPherson protesters, who have camped in the park since October, to a separate encampment at Freedom Plaza. snip The McPherson Square site, Akhter said, “has some serious concerns that should be addressed immediately.” The problems include an ongoing risk of hypothermia, fire threats from the use of candles and propane heaters, inadequate food sanitation and a rodent infestation that is “clearly visible even during daylight hours.”

2. Not at all, I support OWS
What's your point? People aren't interested in what's happening in DC?
You are rude in a big way. |

4. No more, I suspect, than the campers that hang out in Lafayette Sq...
...but I suspect the health problems of a lot of concentrated protestors is a relevant issue for local Government.

5. Funny thing is, OWS is so relevant that there is an effort to shut them down
it's always important to know what is relevant.

9. rat infestations and hypothermia are not relevant, then?
I think they are, as are the issues brought up by OWS and ODC.
They mayor is not a bad guy and apparently the problems are big enough to warrant this change. He's asking them to move to Freedom Plaza, not "shut them down." of course, you have to read the entire article and not just jump to conclusions to get it. |

14. You do know there is this thing about Occupying Congress on the 17
yes there will be a rat problem (from city father's perspective), as in a bunch of OWSers coming from all over the country...
Here is some background. You know who is leaning HARD on the Mayor and the Park Service. The Chairman of the Oversight Committee... Mr. Daryl Issa. Mr, Issa has a problem with the type of non furry rats. Last time the locals showed up at his office to turn in a letter, he called the cops and closed the office. He really has an issue with the non furry, bipedal type of rats. Yes, he is from just north of here, What do you want to know on Mr. Issa and his antics? |

6. #Occupiers should
1. Immediately prove there is no rat infestation, and
2. Sue the city for libel. |

7. No, they're suggesting they move to where the other Occupy DC encampment is.
The Occupy DC encampment at McPherson Square is in a space under the jurisdiction of the Park Police and has been there for months. But the rat infestation has been reported for some time.
I do not recommend camping beside a rats' nest, for this is what we are talking about. |
