A Western New York man was arrested Wednesday on charges that he threatened to kill Rep. Adam Schiff and Sen. Chuck Schumer.
Salvatore Lippa, 57, of Greece, New York, was charged with threatening to assault and murder a federal official on account of the performance of their official duties.
According to the criminal complaint, on Jan. 23, Schiff's Washington, D.C., office received a threatening voicemail that included a death threat.
Lippa started the threatening message by calling the congressman "Schiff, Shifty Schiff," invoking the nickname used by President Donald Trump for Schiff, the lead House manager during Trump's impeachment trial.

(557 posts)of this was Obama's fan who threatened Trump for doing his duly elected duties. What would be done with this man? The judge needs to make an example out of this person for all who threaten any official.I hope Adam has body guards around him. Trump has got to go. Looks like the only Republican who has any morals is Romney. Sad.

(12,586 posts)Michael Cohen explained this at his Congressional hearing.
Trump doesn't come out and say, "I want this person killed." He makes the person seem sub-human by giving him childish nicknames, and blames him for all his woes -- and by extension, those of his followers. "I could do so much better for you without Shitty Schiff's hoax investigations." Then when some loony takes action, Fat Donnie can stand there with clean hands. "All of my speeches have been perfect."
All it takes is one deranged person and pow, mission accomplished. The same technique works with anti-abortion leaders, who demonize the doctors to the point where a mentally unstable individual thinks that by killing the man he is "saving the babies." Lots of abortion providers have been assassinated by Operation Rescue leaders doing this.

(1,638 posts)For everyone else that hasn't seen the term used before. It's the method that Sarah Palin used to get Gabby Giffords shot, with the crosshairs on her website.

stochastic terrorism[ stuh-kas-tik ter-uh-riz-uhm ]
noun
the public demonization of a person or group resulting in the incitement of a violent act, which is statistically probable but whose specifics cannot be predicted:
The lone-wolf attack was apparently influenced by the rhetoric of stochastic terrorism.

(2,690 posts)Palin stands guilty of what amounts to a murderous whistle-blow, giving herself distance from any murderous results inspired by her graphic.
But I don't know that I agree she used the graphic deliberately for the purpose of getting Gabby Giffords shot. I think she used it to get a chuckle from the Tea Party and would have been perfectly content had no one been murdered. The killing and shootings were, perhaps, just extra gravy to her sad, shallow soul.

(6,857 posts)that the terrorist's intention is to get anyone killed, whether someone specific or just in general. Rather, like tort law, it's more that a reasonable person could or would have expected the outcome.

(21,635 posts)I'm part Italian, and I know what you mean.
I never fully understood right-wing Italian-Americans - of which there are many (probably a majority).
As best I can tell, a lot of it has to do with a) Catholic upbringing of the right-leaning, Cardinal Spellman type (ironically, given the late monsignor's private life); and b) social status - i.e. 'we're accomplished and make money - unlike minorities'.
Again, I'm referring solely to Italian-Am. Republicans, from whom I've heard those sentiments many times.
Then you have Italian-American Democrats, who are some of the most active, savvy, and socially conscious Democrats anyone can find.
"Takes all kinds," as my Piemontese great-grandmother used to say.

But then, as you know Judi, that's life. Can't do right by everyone.

(21,635 posts)"Heritage" is very important to 80% of white Republicans I've met over the years, Southern or not.
America, so they believe, was "built by white Anglo-Saxon Protestants" - especially conservatives.
Anyone else, as far as they're concerned, is to some degree a liability. Black people they consider an outright burden.

It makes sense to me.
And of course; because race, even the white race, is not biological, natural, or divinely inspired, but rather socially constructed, then who gets to be in the "white club" will change over time and be different depending on geography as well.

H2O Man
(73,537 posts)And no need to be "sorry." From your posts here, it is obvious that this is a topic that you have no knowledge of, and something that you clearly have never even thought about. Hence, you attempt humor by listing a fictional protestant Scoti -- which is hilariousthough not in the manner you intended.
There are numerous books that document this phonomenon in American history -- my favorite being the first book I had published. It's actually a rather interesting issue, and one that, should you be interested in expanding your knowledge on things you know nothing about -- zero -- I'd be glad to talk more with you.
Until then, I hope all goes well for you.

(29,067 posts)You've make repeated statements about what I supposedly "know nothing" about and yet what you clearly know nothing about is the most famous female character in American literature.
On its very first page, Gone With the Wind describes Scarlett O'Hara as being of Irish and French descent, and while she is fictional, the circumstances of the period in which the novel is set are not.
When I mention "formal documentation", I'm not speaking of vaguely referenced, untitled books, I'm referrng to formal documents like census records and ship manifests of immigrants which notate the race of the immigrant...Do you have any of those? No, I doubt that you do, since otherwise you'd have noted the racial designation listed for Irish immigrants as being "white" or "caucasian".
Your assumptions about what I supposedly "don't know" about my own Irish family who arrived here 30 years prior to WWI, and with whom I was personally acquainted, are almost humorous.
Have a good one.
You are funny! Thanks!

(73,537 posts)Among many other things, I have studied Irish and Irish-American history for many decades. That does not include fiction, though I know more about the fictional character that you reference without understanding how that exposes your lack of knowledge. After a quick check, I counted 25 sources of documentation on the Irish in America -- a book that a number of DUers have read. I write for an Irish Historical Society in the Old Sod. The section of my library on Irish and Irish-American history is rather large. I know exactly what I'm talking about. That's but one area where we differ.

(29,067 posts)You make all sorts of assertions, but with no documentation to back it up. I know you're a long time DUer and so would know the effect that has.
H2O Man
(73,537 posts)that you think I have a need to "prove" anything to you. However, because I am kind, I will tell you a few books you should start with. The first is by family friend Jay Dolan: "The Irish Americans: A History" (2008). Start with that, and we'll go from there. If my son comes by to help me, I'll copy a few things from my book and try to send them to you on DU e-mail. I'm too busy tonight to get into a long and meaningful discussion on this .....hopefully if I finish the project now taking my time and attention, I'll be able to post it on DU:GD by this time tomorrow. It will hopefully show why I'm not taking the time to go into greater detail now .....
You say you are of Irish stock? Irish or Scotch-Irish? There's a risk of being arrogant if one is Irish, you know. It's something that I see in all of my male relatives, though thankfully it skipped me.

(21,635 posts)I'm part Italian, and have also met some very right-wing Italian-Americans. As you've noticed, they seem to fear being lumped in with minorities more than death itself.
But Italian-American Democrats are very different. They're passionate about change and equality, having known so much discrimination themselves (or their parents did).
One takes the good with the bad, I suppose.
