Sotomayor's Scathing 'Public Charge' Dissent Lights Up Twitter

Source: Bloomberg

(Bloomberg) -- Justice Sonia Sotomayor lit up Twitter after issuing a dissent against the Supreme Court’s 5-4 vote to allow an immigrant wealth test -- designed to weed out green card applicants deemed likely to need public assistance -- to go into effect.

The Illinois rule says immigrants who are “likely at any time to become a public charge” because they may in the future need benefits such as food stamps, Medicaid or housing assistance may be turned away. It followed a ruling on Jan. 27 that was already poised to take effect in 49 states.

Sotomayor, who joined fellow liberal Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan in the minority, argued that cases have repeatedly been rushed to the Supreme Court without being “ventilated fully in the lower courts.”

She went as far as to say that the practice is “putting a thumb on the scale in favor” of the party that won a stay -- a pointed dig at the Trump administration and her conservative colleagues.

1. She's right, the rush-to-judgment Court is ruling like partisans instead of deliberating

Courts are slow, but weighing all sides is important. We're getting blitzkrieg justice.

2. Might be time to enlarge SCOTUS to 13 and pack all the spots with extremely young liberal justices

but if it blew back on FDR, don't see how we will get it done now. I think impeachment is more probable, or judicial reform with an 18 year limit and 2 picks max per president (Holder's idea). Glenn Kirschner says there will be a Trump Crimes Commission. But he really sounds like he's running for AG at some point.

court appointments we might as well go for broke imo and throw it out to enlarge SCOTUS otherwise things will get worse with a majority SCOTUS consisting of extremist right wing nutjobs.

Roberts has no grounds for impeachment. Kavanaugh does, but that ain't happening either. 67 is too high.

8. The SC agrees with Trump--only wealthy white people need apply here.

The irony is that most wealthy white people want nothing to do with a country where rabid white men openly carry assault weapons looking for an opportunity to start a civil war, domestic terrorists roam around murdering as many people as possible at malls or schools or concerts or churches, and where environmental degradation has been unleashed. They’d rather stay in nice, clean, safe Norway or Switzerland or France or almost any other European country.

We must retake a Senate majority this fall. Otherwise, we will have an extremist Republican Supreme Court for decades to come, and the US we know will no longer exist as corporate control of government becomes permanent. To me, winning the Senate is more important then the presidency.
