Trump campaign sues New York Times for libel over 2019 op-ed

Source: The Hill

President Trump's reelection campaign is suing The New York Times for libel, claiming that the newspaper knowingly published false information about the president in an op-ed last year.

The lawsuit, filed in New York State Supreme Court on Wednesday, accuses the Times of intentionally defaming Trump with an op-ed claiming that his 2016 campaign had an "overarching deal" with Russia.

"The statements were and are 100 percent false and defamatory," Jenna Ellis, a lawyer for the campaign, said in a statement.

"The complaint alleges The Times was aware of the falsity at the time it published them, but did so for the intentional purpose of hurting the campaign, while misleading its own readers in the process,” Ellis added.

Are they gonna sue for every one of red don's lies that gets reported as such?

Even the deep-pockets campaign to re-install him will be bankrupt pretty soon.

Lying under oath would not bother Trump at all.

He started his term in office lying with his hand on the Bible as he took his oath.

Ya'll nailed it. The discovery would be awesome. I'd pay to be in on it. Then we can revisit the Mueller Report, all the discovery Schiff and Pelosi dug up, and all the rest.

So, does this mean that he did it, or just plans to do it? If I were Barr, I'd quit right now.

Donald Trump may be the most well known liar in the entire world, and he definitely is the most well known in the U.S.A. A well known liar, accusing someone else, (who has an outstanding reputation for the truth) of lying.....

If he wants to sue over an op-ed, but, as lawsuit happy as he is, he never sues over all the news stories that he claimed were fake. Wonder why that is.

have an extremely steep hill to climb in asserting a claim of libel.

See New York Times Co. v. Sullivan which established the requirements that a public figure must meet to assert libel.

Between the Trump suit and the Nunes nonsense, the GOP is becoming the party of SLAPP suits -- nuisance lawsuits designed to deter free expression. Pitiful.
