The big picture: COVID-19 has killed more than 2,700 people and infected over 81,000 others. By Wednesday morning, South Korea had the most cases outside China, with 1,261 infections. Europe's biggest outbreak is in Italy, where 374 cases have been confirmed.

(3,299 posts)bring your wuhan chapter home late in game, conceal that for a few weeks, have them mix with thousands of members in church and elsewhere, tell them their immune because they are believers, don't wear masks because you don't need them, etc., etc.

(794 posts)If you survive a first attack, do you gain an immunity?
Can't find any info on the Net. This is an important factor in a spreading epidemic, because people can be reinfected or not.
Some strains of flu leave immuno-bodies that protect, but some strains allow the virus to recur.

"The whistleblowing physicians working to fight the virus in Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, revealed that medically cleared patients have been getting reinfected, the Taiwan News reported.
Its highly possible to get infected a second time, one of the doctors, who declined to be identified, told the outlet.
The physician said that medication used to treat the virus can have negative side effects on patients heart tissue, making them more susceptible to cardiac arrest.
A few people recovered from the first time by their own immune system, but the meds they use are damaging their heart tissue, and when they get it the second time, the antibody doesnt help but makes it worse, and they die a sudden death from heart failure, the doctor said."

(26,324 posts)I just had the flu type A. I wouldnt have known it but my partner works in the medical field. He called in sick one day and went in the next and got checked out. He tested positive for type A influenza. I came down with it the next day.
Had I not known I would have thought it was a bad cold. Though it did come on quick and started in the chest versus sniffles.
Its the first time Ive ever taken tamiflu. We probably could have skipped it but since we had the diagnosis it made sense.
Like a dummy I procrastinated and didnt get vaccinated this year. My partner has to for work.

(4,137 posts)Something like 15% of the people who get this strain of coronavirus are requiring medical intervention. It should make sense that more people will need treatment than will die, and probably a lot more. If you extrapolate the numbers, something like one billion people could need hospital treatment if this goes worldwide; why else do you think China has been building temporary hospitals in Wuhan?

Avoid touching your face with your fingers. Assume they're contaminated unless you've just washed them.
Wash your hands.
Scratch itches on your face with the back of your wrist.
Wash your hands.
If you're ill, cough and sneeze into the crook of your elbow to avoid passing it on.
Wash your hands. Have I mentioned that?
The bug seems to be spread on contaminated surfaces and, unlike smallpox and HIV, it is viable for a week or so.
If you have a dry cough and a fever, stay home unless there is a place to go to to get tested for the virus. If you are also very short of breath, it's ER time. Fever means something in the 101.5F ballpark.
And if you're outside CA and some nitwit of a MAGAt says it's hitting the right place, mention that it didn't respect national borders and it's not going to respect state lines and he's next.

(19,192 posts)It could be airborne. I refuse to stop breathing for anyone!

(111,237 posts)Remember the 57 passengers they released after a flight from China in cattle class with a coughing passenger. Were it efficiently transmitted through droplets, I'd expect a few people to have tested positive for it.
Onboard the Diamond Princess, patients were quarantined in their cabins and brought food on trays, ship personnel were wearing protective equipment like masks, face shields, and gloves. Yet the virus continued to spread . This is another reason I think it's likely surface contamination rather than droplet. That doesn't mean it's impossible, especially in close quarters. I just find it unlikely.
I hope to hell I'm right. You can avoid touching your face with your fingers until you do a good hand wash. You can't, as you said, avoid breathing and masks get soggy quickly and are very uncomfortable.

(26,324 posts)We probably wouldnt have known it but he works in a clinic and got tested after taking one day off. I dont know if they always test or if they are on high alert.
He was home sick and warned me not to drink out of his glass. I was like Im strong like bull. Im invincible! he went in to work the next day and came home that morning with the diagnosis. Doh! I got sick that night.
He had been vaccinated for type A but I procrastinated this year. I may have been a little worse off or Im a big baby when Im sick. Which is true.
You are right about the fever and dry cough. Had I not known, I would have assumed a cold. But it did come on pretty quick without any sniffles.
He came home with Tamiflu and they called in a prescription for me.

(2,894 posts)<<The patient was transferred to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento from another hospital in Northern California a week ago with a suspected viral condition... The patient had not yet been diagnosed, but UCD staff considered the patient as a possible coronavirus case and asked the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for testing... However, the patient did not immediately get tested for coronavirus because they didn't fit the existing CDC criteria.
The CDC eventually ordered a test Sunday and confirmed Wednesday that the patient was infected... It was not the hospital's first coronavirus case, "and because of the precautions we have had in place since this patient's arrival, we believe there has been minimal potential for exposure here at UC Davis Medical Center," the email stated.>>

reports that the case is a resident in Solano County, in Northern California. Solano County is home to Travis AFB, where people were quarantined after travel from China or aboard the Diamond Princess cruise.
